Aberdeen Beach
45 A George Washington Wilson photograph (no. 4045) showing Aberdeen beach in the late 19th century.
Bathing machines (also called bathings huts) can be seen at the water's edge. These were drawn to and from the sea by horses, as can be seen in the image.
There were about 30 machines on the beach at any one time and male and female bathing areas were segregated.
In 1933 the horses were retired and the machines served as static changing huts until 1954. They were then kept in storage and later offered for public sale as mementos of a bygone bathing era. St Rognvald Crew
2700 This is one of two images copies of which were kindly donated to Aberdeen Local Studies in 2015.
We believe the photographs show different crews of the St Rognvald that was built in Aberdeen in 1901 by Hall, Russell & Company. It was a steel construction steamship that carried passengers and cargo and sailed routes that included Leith, Aberdeen, Orkney and Shetland. The ship was owned by the North of Scotland and Orkney and Shetland Steam Navigation Company.

2880 Sadly, my report ends here. It has been a great pleasure researching the relationship between two countries with which I strongly identify. I was born in Poland and moved to Scotland when I was 6 months old along with my family. I can relate to both parts and consider myself a citizen of both countries. I hope you have enjoyed reading this report and are encouraged to research into your own family ancestry. Maybe you'll find some Polish heritage. Who knows? But most of all I hope you have become more knowledgeable on the matter, possibly making our community more aware of racism and prejudice and helping to tackle these very important issues in Aberdeen.

Lobster fisher's hut on South Uist, Hebrides
3322 A print of a George Washington Wilson photograph showing a lobster fisher's hut.
The meagre existence of crofters in the vast landscapes of Hebridean islands is demonstrated vividly in the South Uist images of the huts used by lobster fishermen and kelp makers which are partially dug into the ground as protection from the wind. Cart on Orkney
3325 This print of a George Washington Wilson photograph was taken on the island of Hoy. It shows an ox that has been harnessed to a cart. Albert Quay
3337 A scene of industry at the end of Albert Quay.
Fishermen can be seen unloading crans of herring from their steam drifters into barrels on horse drawn carts.
Given the location, some way from the more hygienic fish market, and the rough and ready barrels, these may be condemned, waste fish, heading to nearby chemical works to be converted into fishmeal.
Looking east, the photograph shows the ferry office in the background on the right. Between the carts part of a pontoon dock marked Aberdeen can be seen in the distance.
The photograph was likely taken around the 1920s. Matthews' Quay

These vessels are quite possibly Fife-Ness (A377), the Blossom (A9), and Star of the North (A633). All three of these vessels were registered in the area between 1903 and 1915.
A large merchant ship can also be seen along Provost Mathews' Quay. This looks like the steamship St. Sunniva, built in 1887 by Hall Russell for the North of Scotland & Orkney & Shetland Steam Navigation Company Ltd. As their name suggests, the company operated services to the Northern Isles. Beyond Matthews' Quay, Victoria Dock is visible.
The commercial traffic taking up the river and bustling townscape in the distance highlights the merchant trade for which Aberdeen was famed. Point Law

4202 A photograph showing people enjoying Aberdeen Beach on a sunny day. The image shows the stretch of promenade and beach between the Beach Boulevard junction and the Beach Ballroom.
An enclosed play area with shelter can be seen in the middle distance. Closer to the foreground are changing huts. On the side of the latter is a blackboard displaying high and low water temperatures.
This image likely dates from the 1970s. It comes from a collection of slides donated to Aberdeen City Libraries by Aberdeen City Council's publicity department. Orphan Girls' Asylum
72 The Aberdeen Orphan Girls' Asylum was also know as Mrs Elmslie's Institute. It later became Aberdeen High School for Girls and is now Harlaw Academy.
The HS/RCAHMS World War One Audit Project tells us that during WWI the school was part of the 1st Scottish General Hospital. This was one of four Territorial Force military hospitals established during wartime in Scotland. Buildings belonging to three other schools (Central, Rosemount and Westfield) were also used by the hospital, as was the city's Oldmill Poorhouse.
Correspondent Ed Fowler provided the following comments:
"This sketch by architect Archibald Simpson features the beautiful building in the Italian style of Architecture.
The central statue depicted above the entrance was not realised. It was instituted in November 1840 "For Maintaining, Clothing and Educating Orphan Girls", born of Parents who have resided in the Parishes of St Nicholas, Old Machar, or Nigg, for some 3 Years prior to their decease. The girls were admitted from the age of 4 to 8 years.
The building of what was then the Girl's High School (now Harlaw Academy) was incorporated into the 1st Scottish General Hospital, one of 4 Territorial Force military hospitals established in WW1 in Scotland. The buildings of 3 other schools were used by the Hospital (the Central School (later Aberdeen Academy); Rosemount; and Westfield), as well as the City's Poorhouse, along with huts and tents. The hospitals provided beds for 34 officers and 1,385 other ranks." |
