Exchequer Row
687 This view shows the narrow congested Exchequer Row, around 1900. It is a photograph of a watercolour painting by Alexander J. Murray that is in the collection of Aberdeen Archives, Gallery and Museums (AAGM).
The Balmoral style tower of the Salvation Army Citadel, opened in 1896, is seen in the distance with the Market Cross surrounded by an ongoing market.
Exchequer Row (first mentioned in 1350) was a short street connecting the Shiprow to the Castlegate, and on its right side, were a number of courts leading into an area crammed with insanitary dwellings which were later demolished.
It was popularly supposed that the name Exchequer Row derived from the Aberdeen Mint which stood in the area. However, it comes from the name of the Royal Customs House - the Skakkarium, dating back to the 14th century. The Shiprow
1764 Shiprow showing Provost Ross' House. The building was renovated, extended, and subsequently occupied by Aberdeen Maritime Museum.
This sketch is by Aberdeen born Robert Douglas Strachan (1875-1950) who went on to become an acclaimed stained-glass artist. See his Oxford Dictionary of National Biography entry for details of his life and career. Provost Ross's House

2308 Caroline Agnes Isabella Phillips born 13th December 1870 at the Free Church School in Kintore. Her parents were James Alexander Phillips, schoolmaster and Jean Phillips nee Watt. Caroline became a journalist of the Aberdeen Daily Journal and became interested in Women's rights. She joined the WSPU and was honorary secretary of the Aberdeen branch from 1907 to 1909. Her correspondence (including correspondence with the Pankhursts) is archived in Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums Collections, in the Watt collection. The Old Aberdeen Town Hall
2496 A postcard image of Old Aberdeen High Street showing the old Town Hall building.
A shop named James Findlay can be seen on the left at what is now 105 High Street.
Correspondent A. G. Duthie informs us that James Findlay is listed in the Aberdeen Post Office Directory for 1904-05 as a newsagent. This gives us a good indication of the date of the photograph. The Art Gallery Redevelopment
2662 The exterior of the Art Gallery in January 2018. The Art Gallery closed in 2015 for a major £30 million redevelopment. The main contractor on the project is McLaughlin and Harvey. The redesign was approved by councillors in 2013.
For much of the redevelopment the front of the building was covered in scaffolding and a large decorated screen. This image shows the recently re-emerged facade and the new top floor under construction. The Art Gallery - Before redevelopment: 1
