Hall Russell shipbuilders
6 Hall Russell, Ship Builders, Marine Place c. 1950s/60s. Note the main office is off to the right. The entrance at the top of the stairs is to the loft, where scale drawing and templates were drafted. The shipwrights department was on the ground floor to the south of this building.

74 This image from the Spital looks downhill (northwards) and shows College Bounds. The Powis Gate Towers, near the junction with University Road, can be seen in the distance.

110 This photograph shows the Denburn entrance to the second Trinity Hall, home of the Seven Incorporated Trades of Aberdeen. The first Trinity Hall was located on Shiprow and was originally a monastery. The second Trinity Hall was opened on Union Street on 6th March 1847, while the third was opened on Holburn Street in October 1967.

"This portal was constructed using the salvaged Memorial Inscription and Arms panels from the old Bequestor's Gateway to the 1st Tarnty Ha' which stood on Trinity Corner/Putachieside. The Trades had built this fine ornamental gateway with the following inscription: "To ye glorie of God and comfort of the poore this hows was given to the Crafts by Mr. William Guild, Doctour of Divinitie, Minister of Abd: 1633". The buildings were removed when the area was redeveloped in the 1840s but the gateway was built into the Lower Denburn wall of the 2nd Trinity Hall which was opened in Union Street in 1847." 140 View of Park Street with an Aberdeen Corporation Bus and the Eastern Star pub visible. The pub occupied the corner of Park Street and East North Street.
The Aberdeen Pub Companion (1975) states that it was built in 1890 and that James Hill was the first licensee. It was familiarly known as Jimmy Hill's and was a popular local pub. It was demolished around 1960 to make way for the large roundabout at the foot of the Beach Boulevard.

283 Doorway of Provost Skene's House with the coat of arms of Provost George Skene. He was Provost of the City from 1676 - 1685, although the house dates from around 1545. The motto above the doorway reads "Gratis a Deo duta", which means "Thanks be given to God". The doorway is surrounded by thistles and roses to commemorate the restoration of Charles II. No. 27 Tram
392 Many thanks to Silver City Vault users Dr Mike Mitchell and Brian Kennedy for providing us with information on this photo. It shows the no. 27 tram on Victoria Road with the wall of Balnagask House in the background.
The Balnagask Mains farm is partially visible to the left of the tram. The St. Fittick's Road terminus of the Torry Route is located further along Victoria Road.
The female conductor indicates the photo was taken during the Great War. The tram waits to depart for Bridge Street. St. Paul's Episcopal Church
508 A lithograph of St. Paul's Episcopal Church from around 1870. It faced out onto Loch Street, near the junction with St. Paul's Street.
It was later neighboured by the Co-op Headquarters and Arcade and the Aberdeen Education Authority's Music Centre. The Gothic style church was built in 1865 by John Russell Mackenzie. It was eventually demolished as part of extensive redevelopment of the area.
As can be seen at the top of the image, we originally mistook this image as depicting Holburn West Church. Many thanks to correspondent Martin Greig for pointing out this error. Shepherd's Court
695 An image of Shepherd's Court looking towards the Guestrow. The turreted house at 21 Guestrow was occupied by Sheriff-Depute Andrew Thomson and his wife Agnes Divie in 1673. Many thanks to Edward Fowler for this information. Upper Denburn
729 Upper Denburn, looking east, prior to its demolition.
Brick gable tenements can be seen on the left already stripped of their roofs.
The viewpoint is looking from the Dyers Court area eastwards towards Marischal College Tower and the retaining wall of the Royal Infirmary (with its dome on the skyline). This lead to Spa Street and Woolmanhill beyond.
The houses and tenements on the right are more sparse and primarily traders yards.
Garden Nook Close led off the left past a timber yard to the Well of Spa. The Well O' Spa Pub was on the extreme left corner.
Note the partial visible trade sign on the ridge of the distant roof - most likely James Stephen & Son. They were carvers, gilders/ornamental plasterers, mirror & picture frame makers, artists' colourmen and fine art dealers and operated at 48-50 Woolmanhill from around 1890-1933. Gordon's Hospital Spire rises beyond these premises.

864 This image shows HUU432, a Bedford OB coach parked outside Seafield Garage in Cullen. Notice the extensive array of petrol pumps in the background, with such examples as "National Benzone" and "Power".
The vehicle was owned and operated by Donald Grant. Of solid construction, it no doubt covered many hundreds of miles in its journeys through the North-East.
Seafield Garage was owned by John Lawrence, who was another bus operator in the town.

876 This image was taken around 1909 from a hill at the west end of Culter - 7 miles west from Aberdeen looking down on the North Deeside Road towards Banchory. The image shows the cottages known as Clayhills with the houses of Malcolm Road beyond. Hidden in the trees at the right hand side is the statue of Rob Roy overlooking the Leuchar Burn which runs through the wooded valley. Cults Fire Brigade
1049 This photograph from 1905, shows the personnel of Cults Fire Brigade with their horse drawn fire engine. These men were all volunteers and included a joiner, butcher, shoemaker and a plumber. In the photo are - Holding horses - D. Brown (butcher with Wishart), J. R. Reith (chemist). Standing at the side of the engine - Major Hislop of Derncleuch (founder of the Brigade), H. Robertson (gardener), A. R. Will (plumber), A. Calder (slater), J. Robertson (gardener). On Engine - J. McPherson (joiner), Wisley (driver), Prof, J. McIntyre of Abbotswells, J. Davidson (butcher with Williamson), Wm. Davidson (shoemaker), Sir Robert Greig. When a fire broke out, a hooter was blown and the men downed tools to gather at the old school. Horses had to be brought from the local firms such as the baker or coal merchant, who used horses to pull their delivery carts. The fire engine was housed in St. Devenick's Place and had a manual system where the men had to pump by hand. Suburban tram in Bankhead Road
1134 This is tram 2 of the Aberdeen Suburban Tramways Company, which operated two routes from Mannofield to Bieldside and Woodside to Bankhead from 1904 to 1927. Car 2 was one of the four closed top double deckers in the first six ordered (cars 1 and 5 were open top) and is here photographed at the terminus at Bankhead.

1142 This is tram 4 of the Aberdeen Suburban Tramways Company, which operated two routes - from Mannofield to Bieldside and Woodside to Bankhead - from 1904 to 1927. This is one of the initial fleet of 6 trams (all double deckers, but two open top) which opened the line in 1904 and the photograph is taken at Stoneywood Church. The depot was just round the corner on the right.

1146 Blacksmiths in the smiddy at Dunecht. This shop appears to have been fairly busy, employing as it did, 3 blacksmiths. They were called upon for all sorts of metal related jobs. All the tools of the trade can be noted, including 2 anvils for hammering and a main furnace (centre of picture). All 3 blacksmiths are seen here wearing leather aprons, which protected them from the hot flying sparks. No industrial glasses were in use however at this time, and the traditional flat bonnet is still the norm.
Correspondent David Christie has identified the blacksmith on the left as James Stephenson Smith, his great grandfather. David explains that Smith worked as a blacksmith for Dunecht Estate from 1925 to 1929 and so this dates the photograph to this period. His great grandfather also worked at other properties belonging to the estate, such as renovations of Dunnottar Castle. Smith had to give up working as a Blacksmith after breaking his leg in a fall while working there.
He subsequently worked as a driver for the Dunecht Garage, which ran buses at the time, and later for the W. Alexander & Sons bus operating firm.
There is an article about this image by Hilary Simpson in the Evening Express of 17 September 1986. It details the memories of readers Margaret Skene and John Gray. Margaret's grandfather was Alexander Innes, the figure in the middle. On the right is Bill Innes, a son of Alexander. They are said to have run the smiddy with the assistance of James Smith.
The article also explains that the image was originally a postcard. One of a series detailing the various trades active on the Dunecht estate of Lord Cowdray.

1149 The Grand Central Cinema on George Street, Aberdeen.
The film being shown is Radio Parade of 1935. This starred Will Hay and dates the photograph to around 1934.
The photograph looks eastwards from Craigie Street towards the cinema on George Street.
The building at 286 George Street had previously been a furniture branch of Allan's Public Supply Stores and was on the site of an old Baptist Chapel.

1281 Gateway to Shepherd's Court, Guestrow. Much of this area was demolished in the 1930's as part of a slum clearance scheme. However, this arch was saved and was incorporated into the entrance to the refurbished Provost Skene's House after spending some time in Union Terrace Gardens.

1469 Correspondent Dr Mike Mitchell has been in touch to tell us that the horse drawn bus in this photograph is one of "Allan's Liners". This was the name given to the Aberdeen to Cluny bus from its introduction in 1849 until the route passed to the Great North of Scotland Railway motor buses in 1906. Allan continued to run mail gigs and coaches until at least after the Great War.

1477 Springfield Cottage as seen from Springfield Road looking north west. The photograph was likely taken during the 1950s at which point the cottage was on the outskirts of the city.
The residential development we know as Craigiebuckler had yet to be built. The line of trees in the background is that of Craigiebuckler Avenue. If we turned the camera some degrees to the north we would have a view of Craigiebuckler Parish Church and its halls.
The cottage was most likely demolished as part of the aforementioned residential development.

1483 This photograph by James Kellas from the early 1950s shows a farm called Mains of Ruthrieston. It was located where Cranford Road joins Broomhill Road. This image looks north east from Cranford Road.

1490 This image of Union Glen, taken from near the junction with Cuparstone Row, was likely taken by James Kellas in the early 1950s.
The building that can be seen above the bridge, on Holburn Street, was number 81 at the time. It was a shop belonging to Alexanders, a radio and television dealer. This business closed down in the 1980s. At the time of writing, the building is occupied by the Aberdeen Drilling School.
The larger building on the right is 82 Holburn Street. It has a long history as a bar and was known for generations as Aitken's. It was previously known as the Great Western Bar and later as the Malt Mill, which was originally the name of a lounge opened in 1963. The name references the building at one time having been a distillery.

1493 This image taken in the early 1950s looks north along a small road, roughly located in line with present day Craigiebuckler Avenue, towards Burnieboozle Croft and Farm. The line of trees in the background mark the side of Hazledene Road. Along this track in the opposite direction is the location of Burnieboolze House.

1494 This photograph, likely dating from the early 1950s, looks north east and shows the yard of Burnieboozle Farm. It was located at the junction of Hazledene Road and what is now Craigiebuckler Avenue.
