Fishwives, the Green, Aberdeen
2703 A Valentine's Series postcard showing the view looking westwards from the Green, towards the train station and Bridge Street. This roughly corresponds to the part of the Green, beyond Rennie's Wynd, that now runs underneath the Trinity Centre to the Denburn Road.
This early 20th century image shows a significantly different scene. On the left, a row of fishwives, along the northern wall of Hadden's textile factory, display maritime stock for sale. They are attended by an assembled crowd of shoppers and children.
Beyond can be seen the bridge, known as the Puffing Briggie, that linked the Green and the foot of Windmill Brae across the train tracks. A sheltered railway platform can be seen to its left and a corner of the Palace Hotel is visible on the right. Aberdeen Market 5: the main stairwell
4381 A photograph by Roddy Millar showing the main stairwell in the Market building. This was located in the western side of the site, towards the Green.
Looking east into the building from in front of the premises of Oor Cafe, an illuminated sign with Market Village branding and the motto "for life's essentials..." is shown above the stairwell. Below this is a sign advertising the Golden Touch Jewellers.
A couple of shoppers climb the steps. Behind them, the lower food hall can be seen, including part of Merchant & Reid, a fishmonger.

173 The Aberdeen Bon-Accord and Northern Pictorial was published weekly from April 1926 until June 1959. It delighted readers with news and sports items illustrated with high quality photographs. This image is from the cover of one of the special Holiday Numbers which were produced annually in June to promote Aberdeen as "The Mecca of Holidaymakers".
It is the cover of the 1932 number, and we have also uploaded that from 1935. The covers feature pleasing use of bold colours and graphic design. In this image we see a boat racing past a packed Aberdeen beach and the city's distinctive skyline in the background.

339 This treasure is a souvenir brochure and programme for the first Aberdeen Dance Festival Week, held from 16 - 20 August 1948, which aimed "to make Aberdeen Scotland's mecca for good dancing". It was staged by the directors of the Palais de Danse dance hall and organised by the managing director, Mr. Ernest A. Bromberg. This delightful brochure describes competitions such as the Novice 3-Dance, Pre-amateur 4-Dance and Team Dancing Championship, gives details of the panel of adjudicators, and features adverts for local dancing schools.
It also includes a personal message from Mr Bromberg who stated "Since the inception of the Palais de Dance it has been my consistent desire to do everything possible to encourage a greater incentive to improve Ballroom Dancing and to provide facilities to make dancing a popular and healthy form of recreation, exercise, and entertainment". The Palais de Dance in Diamond Street was believed to be the oldest principal ballroom in Aberdeen, dating back to the mid-1920s.
In 1965 it underwent an extensive interior reconstruction at a cost of £75,000 with a new lounge bar, rounding of the dance floor from its previous square shape, and a circular balcony to watch the dancers. It became Raffles night club in 1976.
