1648 Correspondent Ed Fowler has been in touch with the following information concerning this image:
"Bathing Machines were temporary changing rooms that were wheeled down to the beach strand. They allowed sea swimmers a ready facility of changing into bathing costumes or out of wet costumes after swimming in the sea.
The facility was spartan - just 2 bench seats - wet and dry sides perhaps and a small round vanity mirror at head level.
They were soon outmoded and removed from the beach and stored behind the Banner Mill for 1940's children, such as the writer, to explore and vandalise.
The well-built gentleman in this photograph was likely a self-appointed lifeguard of the era and maybe Scotland's champion swimmer and diver - Aberdeen's Mr Willie 'Moosie' Sutherland.
He was famed for his rescue successes at Aberdeen Beach, Walkers Dam and the River Dee and was an active member of the Dee Swimming Club and Bon Accord Club since 1865.
'Moosie' saved well over 100 Lives and was given a recognition of Rescue service award by Lord Provost Leslie in 1871 at the age of 27 years.
He died aged 42 on the 20th September 1886 his last competitive race was the first ever Dee to Don Estuaries swim in the same year." Home from the Herring Harvest
1800 An image entitled Home from the Herring Harvest. It shows the paddle steam tugboat John McConnachie (built 1879) towing a large number of scaffie fishing vessels into Aberdeen Harbour. The south breakwater can be seen in the background.
Steam tugboats were greatly useful for the safe and orderly navigation of the harbour by sailing ships. They were also employed in rescue and salvage operations and for the launching of boats. Braeriach

2135 The British Airways rescue helicopter G-ATBY initially dropped a walkie-talkie to the crew of the stranded Ben Gulvain to enable communicate and later airlifted all 17 crew members to safety. 95-99 Union Street

"Grants Furnishings eventually extended in to the street level premises from the first floor and was a popular supplier of furniture items in the 1940's and 50's by offering convenient hire purchase.
Just out of frame is the sliding gate across the arcade style entrance which crossed via a covered cast iron support bridge above Carnegie Brae and up steps to the North Gallery of Simpson's New Market which was mainly laid out with 2nd hand Books Stall displays and a Stamp Collector's Shop.
A Victorian coin operated clockwork display provided entertainment for children of an exciting fire engine and ladder rescue scene." Beach Rescue Lifeguard
2466 A photographic portrait of an unknown beach rescue lifeguard.
Correspondent Ed Fowler suggests the sitter may be Willie 'Moosie' Sutherland, an accomplished swimmer, diver, and local life-guard.
In Allenvale Cemetery, there is an ornate granite memorial to Sutherland made by Messrs Bower & Florence of the Spittal Granite Works. It has an inscription that reads: "Erected by public subscription in memory of William Sutherland, in recognition of his gallantry in saving upwards of 120 lives from death by drowning. Born at Aberdeen, 19th January 1845, died 20th September, 1885. A hero in humble life interred here."
Obituaries in the local newspapers state that Sutherland worked as an assistant in the City Surveyor's Office. He was formerly a slater and had become an excellent draughtsman. Between five and six hundred people are reported as in attendance at his funeral. S.S. Intaba
2702 A postcard showing the launch of the steamship Intaba on 6th September 1910. The ship was constructed by Hall, Russell & Company at their York Street yards for John T. Rennie, Son and Company of Aberdeen and London. The launch was watched by a crowd of thousands.
The Intaba was the largest vessel built in Aberdeen at the time. It was 387 feet in length and weighted 4,832 tons. It was designed to transport passengers and cargo, initially between London and the province of Natal in the Union of South Africa. It could accommodate 70 first class passengers and 60 in second class. The ship's name means mountain in Zulu.
The Intaba and passenger liners like it were fundamental to continuing the British colonisation of southern Africa following the Second Boer War (1899-1902). In May 1910 the British Government had unified its existing and newly acquired regional colonies into the Union of South Africa.
The Intaba went on to have a long and varied career, including working trade and pilgrimage routes. It sailed for 43 years, under various names and owners, and in many different parts of the world, before its eventual demolition in Belgium in 1953.
The Aberdeen Built Ships website (link here) gives considerable detail on the ship's history and states that it was renamed twice; as the Waitomo in 1916 and the Englestan in 1927.
Correspondent Ed Fowler notes that the new ship is being maneuvered primarily by two steam paddle tugs, one on either side, and that a smaller screw steamer tug is also in attendance. He suggests one of the paddle tugs may by the Fairweather. It was built by Richard Stobbs, North Sheilds, in 1871 and was stranded in the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour in 1912. S.S. G. Koch
2705 An Adelphi Series postcard showing the wreck of the S.S. G. Koch off Girdleness, Aberdeen.
The G. Koch was a Danish cargo steamer of 1159 tonnes that was registered in Odense. Due to a particularly bad storm the ship was dashed on the rocks south of Aberdeen harbour on Saturday 13 January 1913.
Despite heroic efforts of three life-saving brigades, and many volunteers, seven of the nineteen on-board drowned. The rescue operation was not completed until Sunday morning. |
