1979 An outdoor portrait of a large group of Aberdeen women. The nature of the photograph and the dress suggest that the subjects belong to an educational organisation. Hatter to the People
2021 A drawing of Samuel "Sammy" Martin, who was known as 'the hatter to the people.' His shop was located at 34 Union Street. William Skene, in East Neuk Chronicles, describes Martin as "one of the most ultra-loyal subjects Her Majesty ever had in these parts." On special occasions he would dress in a red Garibaldi shirt and fancy head dress and play the cornet from the windows of his shop. He was something of a pioneer in local promotion. He is buried in Nellfield Cemetery and his tombstone reads "The last resting place of Samuel Martin, Hatter to the People." Treasure 1: Aberdeen Public Library staff photograph of 1892
2271 What a fabulous photograph of the Central Library staff from when the building opened in 1892. We get a feel for the ladies dress at the time and during our 120 celebrations in 2012 mannequins wore paper costumes replicating the Victorian style.
There were 15 staff then - the Librarian, Sub-Librarian, 9 Assistants, a Reading Room Keeper, a Janitor and 2 staff in the Binding Department but not everyone is in the photograph. The Librarian is definitely missing but we will meet him later.
We have a list of staff names and one in particular was remembered for her helpfulness, courtesy and compilation of the Local Studies catalogue. Miss Emma Valentine joined the service in 1890 as an Assistant and progressed to Assistant in Charge of the Reference Department. Sadly she died young in 1915 and is believed to haunt the building today.
Who do you think Miss Valentine is in the photograph? Walford and Albert E. Bodie
2656 This studio portrait shows Walford Bodie, in highland dress, and his son Albert.
Albert Edward Bodie managed his father's career for a number of years and was himself a Royal Society illusionist. He sadly died aged 25 in 1915, leaving a wife and son.
This photograph comes from a family photograph album, originally owned by Annie "Nan" Henry, held by Aberdeen City Libraries. The Henry Sisters
3006 A fantastic group portrait showing the Henry sisters in Highland dress.
The figure on the near left is most likely a youthful Jeannie Henry (1869-1931) who married Walford Bodie and performed on the stage as Princess Rubie. She appears to have been known as Kitty when she was younger.
It is difficult to say for certain but top and bottom right could be Isabella and Mary Walford Henry respectively.

3358 A poster advertising performances of Emerald Isle (or The Caves of Carric-Cleena) at His Majesty's Theatre. The comic opera was a production of Mr J. S. Jackson's Amateur Opera Company and ran for six nights from 21st November 1910.
The poster indicates that the performances are taking place in aid of the King Edward New Hospital for Sick Children and lists a number of patrons of this undertaking.
Further down the poster is given details of the cast and crew and general information about the performances, including the price for various tickets. One note states that "Bonnets are not allowed in Orchestra Stalls or first three rows of Dress Circle."
Towards the bottom of the poster is a notice for an upcoming production of the George Bernard Shaw play Candida.
Robert Arthur is listed as the theatre's managing director and Mr. H. Adair Nelson is the acting manager.
The wording at the very bottom of the poster indicates it was created by W. & W. Lindsay, theatrical printers, 28 Market Street. His Majesty's Theatre: Dress circle bar. c.1929

192 As Book Week Scotland is celebrated in November it is appropriate to feature a volume from our historic and special collection, "Aberdeen Early Printers".
Of theological content Cum Bono Deo: Raine from the Clouds by Andrew Logie, printed in Aberdeen in 1624, is the earliest Edward Raban work held in Local Studies. Our image shows the title page the arrangement of which was described as "commendable with the judicious use of woodcuts and ornamental borders delighting the eye" (Edmond, J P: The Aberdeen Printers).
In addition to the item displayed we have at least 11 other items in our collection along with examples of other early Aberdeen printers such as Brown and Chalmers.
Raban's office was on the north side of Castle Street. He printed under the sign of "The Townes Armes" and this continued to be the sign board of the Aberdeen Printers for at least 100 years.
One of his earliest friends was the bookseller David Melville. Many books printed by Raban between 1622 and 1633 were printed for Melville and carry his name on the imprint.
Raban's press produced over 150 publications, ranging from graduation theses, sermons, theological works, editions of the psalms, almanacs to printed notices and schoolbooks for the Council.
