Honeybrae House
96 Honeybrae House. This house stood in the middle of a market garden near Morningfield Hospital about one-and-a-half miles west of Aberdeen City Centre. The lands were part of the old royal hunting forest of Stocket, given to the town of Aberdeen by Robert the Bruce. In the 17th century, it came into the ownership of the Skenes of Rubislaw and, in 1875, it was owned by Aberdeen Land Association. This two-storeyed house is most famous for its connection with the poet Lord Byron. In 1798, as a boy of about 10, he was taken there to spend a summer holiday while he was a pupil at Aberdeen Grammar School. At that time, it was probably a fairly new house, standing in its own grounds in a rural situation. He stayed there with his mother and their maid, Isabella Mitchell, before going to visit his old nurse, Agnes Gray. His room was on the first floor. By the 1830s, it was the home of a Captain John Boyd and later of market gardeners. Above the main door, there was a window whose thirteen small designed panes led it to be called 'the thirteen' window. By the 1920s, it had fallen into disrepair and the house was demolished in November 1928. The site was redeveloped for modern housing. The Green
424 The Green. The house occupied by John Buchan, baker, at the foot of the Back Wynd stairs leading up to Union Street was demolished in 1914. In the late seventeenth century the house was owned by George Aedie. Although Boots the Chemist have since relocated elsewhere, the stairs which replaced these are still often referred to as the Boots Stairs because there was an entrance to their premises on the left.
The golden teapot sign that belonged to John Adam's tea and coffee shop disappeared when the shop closed.
Correspondent Ed Fowler investigated the 1904 Post Office directory for Aberdeen to discover more information about the businesses visible in the image. John Adam's premises, with its golden teapot at 64 The Green, can be see on the far right. The tea merchant lived in Hammerfield House, 349 Great Western Road.
The next two entrances to the left, 66 and 68, are for the tenements above the shops. To the left of them at 70 The Green is a drapers called P. & C. Adams. The business also had premises at 47 George Street. Leaving Aberdeen Harbour
502 A Leith registered fifie leaving Aberdeen Harbour. The white building seen behind the sails is the Round House, the Harbour Master's office, on the New Quay at Fittie.
The fifie was a fast wind-powered sailing boat favoured for herring fishing on much of Scotland's east coast from the 1850s until well into the 20th century. Its main features were the vertical stem (front) and stern (back) and the wide beam (width) making them stable in the water.
Fifies had two masts, a main dipping lugsail and a mizzen sail. Fifie's were increasingly decked following the recommendations of Captain Washington's 1849 report into the Moray Firth fishing disaster.

552 This image shows the interior of the original 1867 Aberdeen Joint Station in around 1912. Trains can be seem at the platform, as can a group of railway porters.
The Knowles and Sons kiosk can be seen nestled under the advert covered walkway to the surburban platforms. Platform 10 is located at the rear of the kiosk. On the right of the image, a sign for the "Buchan Train" can be seen near platforms 11, 12 and 13.

1060 Dyce Junction Station, Aberdeen, c.1910, with the large suburban signal box in the foreground. The main line is situated on the left of the box. The "Buchan Line" to Peterhead and Fraserburgh via Maud Junction can be seen in the background. The locomotive here illustrated is a G.N.S.R. 4-4-0, a type of locomotive used throughout G.N.S.R. territory. This particular train is heading towards Aberdeen with passenger coaches in tow. The Great North believed in 4-4-0s to the extent that they owned few locomotives of other wheel arrangements. The Wellington Suspension Bridge

In 1799 a turnpike road was established between Aberdeen and Stonehaven and the Menzies of Pitfodels and the inheritors of the church at Nigg created the Wellington Suspension Bridge to capitalise on the opportunities offered by the new road.
The engineering of the bridge was carried out by Captain Samuel Brown and the architectural features designed by John Smith.
The bridge, which replaced the Craiglug Ferry, opened to pedestrians in November 1830 and full traffic six months later.
It required refurbishment in 1930 and then had to close to vehicles in 1984. In 2002 it was completely closed but after restoration it re-opened for pedestrians in 2008.

The shop, owned by Leslie M. Hatt, was at number 90-92 Union Street. The Hosier first appears, among 23 other hosiers, in Aberdeen Directories for the year 1925-26 and continues to feature until the 1960s. In the directory for 1965-66 the shop has moved to premises at 82 Union Street and another store has been opened at 73 Victoria Road. At this point it was one of only three hosiers listed for the whole city. Hatt also owned a menswear shop which in 1926 was located at 116 Union Street.
Hatt was a patriotic, civic minded, and well known fellow. He was involved in Aberdeen's YMCA and a captain of The Boys' Brigade. The Press and Journal reports a lecture he gave in the 1930s on the meaning of the Flag and Empire. He was most well known, however, for delivering humorous sketches and recitations. Moreover he and Mrs Leslie Hatt were keen singers and regularly contributed to concerts for worthwhile causes.
In 1928 a young sheep that had spent three or four weeks in the window of The Hosier was sold at auction to raise funds for the Lord Provost's Joint Hospital Fund. After much bidding it was eventually won by a butcher from Great Northern Road, who donated it right back to be auctioned again the next week. Arrival of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert
1996 The arrival at Aberdeen Harbour in September 1848 of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The original of this painting by the artist Peter Cleland is now in the possession of Aberdeen City Council. The Royal Family had traveled from London on the Royal Yacht - a wooden paddle steamer called 'Victoria and Albert', with the intention of berthing at Aberdeen and then proceeding by coach to Balmoral. The City's careful arrangements were thrown into disarray when the vessel made such good time under Captain John Cargill that she arrived on Thursday 7th September 1848 - a full day ahead of her expected arrival on the 8th. By good fortune the Harbour Engineer happened to be supervising another vessel when he recognised the Royal Yacht arriving. So that he could arrange its safe mooring and send messages to the Lord Provost George Thompson, bells in the city were set ringing and crowds rushed to the harbour to see the Queen and prince Albert. 2393 The House of Schivas was built around 1585 and was the work of Thomas Leper. The lands were originally held by the Scheves family and successive families made many alterations to this architecturally complex L-plan tower house. 2631 The distance between the termini was inconvenient and missed connections were common. Horse drawn buses and cabs were available but most people changing trains walked. Priority was given to mail which was rushed by carriage between the two stations.
In 1862 Waterloo was handling five passenger services to the north, including through carriages to Inverness, and four trains to Buchan. By this
time a network of branch lines was developing north of Aberdeen.
Following several years of controversy over the route and cost of a direct connection between the SNER and the GNSR, Parliament brokered an agreement between the two companies to jointly fund a line from Kittybrewster to a new station in Guild Street at a cost of about £200,000, involving two tunnels and the culverting of the Denburn. 2640 In the century since the new station opened has
there have been many changes. 1923 saw the
Grouping of the Railways with the GNSR and NBR
becoming part of the London and North Eastern
Railway (LNER) and the Caledonian part of the
London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). In
1948 both were absorbed into the nationalised
British Railways.
The 1930s saw mixed fortunes; new and
improved rolling stock was introduced including
more powerful locomotives. Conversely bus
competition was decimating traffic on branch
lines including Deeside and Buchan; suburban
trains ceased in 1937. During World War 2 all
the glass was removed from the station roof
and replaced by plywood to avoid the effects of
blast and comply with blackout regulations. The
sections were carefully stored under a disused
platform at Fyvie station until the end of the

2955 A photograph of Pennan by James Porter taken from Buchan Illustrated (1904). The book was one of a number of pictorial albums of Aberdeenshire published by the offices of the Aberdeen Daily Journal and the Evening Express. The book was bound for the publishers by W. J. Middleton, Adelphi Works.
All its 80 photographs were taken by James Porter, then based at 6 Schoolhill. He was a well-known and prominent photographer, considered to be one of the first in the City to work with newspapers.
Porter died aged 63 on 31st May 1937 at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. His obituary can be read in the next day's Press and Journal.
Buchan Illustrated accompanies the photograph of Pennan with the following text:
"The beautiful bay of Pennan is the haunt of artists; its village stretches along the margin of the sea under the shadow of rugged cliffs which rise abruptly above the houses to the height of 200 feet. In storms the houses are occasionally flooded at high water. The view from the Red Head of Pennan (562 feet) is a notable one - to the westward, Troup Head; to the eastward, a long line of indented coast; across the Moray Firth, many of the great mountains of Ross, Sutherland, and Caithness." 3398 This photograph shows the Shiprow entrance to the ABC Cinema (formerly the Regal) in 1963. In addition to current screenings of It Happened at the World's Fair, the cinema is also advertising an upcoming double bill of The Scarlet Blade and The Son of Captain Blood.
Silver Screen in the Silver City (1988) explains that the large, canopied entrance on the Shiprow gave access to the stalls foyer, and this could also be reached from the Union Street entrance via various lobbies and doors. 3539 Photograph depicts the construction of some sort of timber pier, railway line and a device running along top of it. photo looking east from Matthew's Quay. Multiple steam trawlers can be seen docked on Point Law in the background. The construction depicted in the photo may be for the purposes of more easily tipping coal onto ships. In the background can be seen the steam trawler A943 Pointer. This ship was built in 1906 by Hall, Russell & Company, Ltd. for Captain William H Burn in Aberdeen and was initially designated as A57. It later came into the ownership of P & J Johnstone in 1938 and was designated as A943. It was later broken up in 1955. Pocra Quay
3569 This photograph depicts Pocra Quay on the left and the South breakwater lighthouse off in the distance on the right.
Multiple ships are registered in Aberdeen and Banff, such as Ebenezer (A892) belonging to Thomas Davidson, Callykhan (BF122) of J. Murray & others, and Tarbat Ness (A203) and Buchan Ness (A204) which belonged to the Girdleness Herring Drifting Company Ltd. based in Aberdeen.
Buchan Ness (A204) was built in 1908 and over the years had its name and registration changed a couple of times. In 1912 it was renamed to F.H.S. and moved to Yarmouth for John F. C. Salmon. Then, in 1929 it was moved to Banff and renamed again to Thealby for John Wood.
The wood screw steamer Vine (A279) also has an interesting story. It was built in 1900 by Forbes & Birnie based in Peterhead for a fish salesman from Aberdeen Thomas Davidson. An article written in The Buchan Observer of 20th March 1900 describes a celebratory banquet in honour of the newly built ship as it was leaving Peterhead to Aberdeen, where it would have a steam engine installed. The vessel was described as an "extraordinary success" due to its appearance and speed.
Unfortunately, in 1915, the ship was captured by enemy submarine and sunk with gunfire 30 miles north-east from Out Skerries, Shetland. All crew returned home safely.
