Hall Russell shipbuilders
6 Hall Russell, Ship Builders, Marine Place c. 1950s/60s. Note the main office is off to the right. The entrance at the top of the stairs is to the loft, where scale drawing and templates were drafted. The shipwrights department was on the ground floor to the south of this building.

608 A photograph looking north from Maitland's Quay, off Sinclair Road, into the River Dee Dock, also known as the Torry Dock.
Supply boats are moored in the dock and mud silos are visible on the left of the image, next to the site of John Lewis & Sons' shipyard.
Beyond the dock, across the River Dee, oil tanks can be seen on Point Law and the shipyard of Hall Russell can be seen in the far distance.

1937 The wreck of the steamship "James Hall".
On Tuesday 23rd February 1904, the steamer James Hall, belonging to the Aberdeen, Leith and Moray Firth Steam Shipping Company Ltd, and the Luddick, belonging to the Aberdeen, Newcastle and Hull Steam Company Ltd, collided in Aberdeen Bay.
The crew of the James Hall were rescued by the Luddick and the former was left to drift ashore on the beach. The damaged Luddick successfully steamed into harbour.
There was a large hole about 17 feet long in the James Hall, but it was thought possible to temporarily repair the damage and refloat the ship. For the next few days, the local press reported that crowds of people had been to see the wreck, and that two trams with posters saying 'To and from the stranded steamer' were put on the Beach route.
Unfortunately, owing to strong winds and heavy seas, salvage attempts were not possible, and the vessel began to break up and its cargo was washed ashore. By the 8th March, very little remained of the wreck. SS James Hall
1938 The wreck of the steam ship the 'James Hall'. It drifted ashore after colliding with another called the 'Luddick' on 23rd February 1904. The 'City of London'
2006 The 'City of London' was launched in April 1844 from the yard of Robert Napier at Govan on the River Clyde, having been built for the Aberdeen Steam Navigation Company and designed by John Duthie, Jnr of Aberdeen. She was regarded as 'the largest and most magnificent iron steamship ever yet built in any part of Her Majesty's dominions' - with the exception of 'Great Britain'. She was constructed entirely of iron, but her deck and the ornamental parts of her cabins were fitted out in oak. She was 231 feet long and measured 1116 tons, and was powered by two engines each of 130 horsepower. This would make her one of the fastest vessels on the Aberdeen - London voyage. She had berths for 110 passengers, with spacious, elegant cabins. The salon was furnished with sofas and chairs covered in green Genoa velvet, while ornamental coloured glass and mirrors produced a warm light.
Her first voyage to London was in July 1844, when her cargo included 600 boxes of salmon and 215 cattle. Her return voyage was completed in under 38 hours - five hours faster than any other vessel had achieved.
By 1870, she was taken off the run, and disposed of. A new 'City of London' was launched in 1871, and she was an even faster vessel and used about 100 tons of coal on each return journey. Aberdeen From Balnagask

One steam trawler is heading to sea while another is returning to harbour. The fishing boats are likely Victoria Regina (A590) and Crisabelle Stephen (A374). Both were built by Alexander Hall & Sons in 1897 and 1906, respectively. St Rognvald Crew

2702 A postcard showing the launch of the steamship Intaba on 6th September 1910. The ship was constructed by Hall, Russell & Company at their York Street yards for John T. Rennie, Son and Company of Aberdeen and London. The launch was watched by a crowd of thousands.
The Intaba was the largest vessel built in Aberdeen at the time. It was 387 feet in length and weighted 4,832 tons. It was designed to transport passengers and cargo, initially between London and the province of Natal in the Union of South Africa. It could accommodate 70 first class passengers and 60 in second class. The ship's name means mountain in Zulu.
The Intaba and passenger liners like it were fundamental to continuing the British colonisation of southern Africa following the Second Boer War (1899-1902). In May 1910 the British Government had unified its existing and newly acquired regional colonies into the Union of South Africa.
The Intaba went on to have a long and varied career, including working trade and pilgrimage routes. It sailed for 43 years, under various names and owners, and in many different parts of the world, before its eventual demolition in Belgium in 1953.
The Aberdeen Built Ships website (link here) gives considerable detail on the ship's history and states that it was renamed twice; as the Waitomo in 1916 and the Englestan in 1927.
Correspondent Ed Fowler notes that the new ship is being maneuvered primarily by two steam paddle tugs, one on either side, and that a smaller screw steamer tug is also in attendance. He suggests one of the paddle tugs may by the Fairweather. It was built by Richard Stobbs, North Sheilds, in 1871 and was stranded in the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour in 1912. Albert Quay
3340 A long shot of trawlers moored along Albert Quay. Pedestrians and horse drawn carts can also be seen.
One the trawlers is the James Pitchers. It was built by Hall, Russell & Company in 1911. It has an entry on the Aberdeen Built Ships website here. It was requisitioned in WWI as a minesweeper and later left town for England and South Africa. It was wrecked on Robben Island in 1924.
The boat being in Aberdeen suggests this photograph was taken during the 1910s.
Behind the James Pitchers is the A194 Coningsby. The Milford Trawlers website (link here) states that the boat was built by Smith's Docks Co., North Shields, in 1906. It was also requisitioned as a minesweeper and fished out of Aberdeen for a short time after the war. Aberdeen Harbour
3528 A photograph looking south east towards the Upper Dock across the junction of Guild Street, Trinity Quay and Market Street.
Multiple trawlers are moored in the dock. Onlookers can be seen alongside the docked boats. An unidentified steam vessel larger than the rest can be seen in the far left in the background.
The first ship on the left of the row is the steel fishing trawler Curlew (A906). This ship was built in the Panmure Yard belonging to Dundee Shipbuilders Co. Ltd., in 1897. In 1903 this ship was registered A906 in Aberdeen. The Curlew was wrecked in 1922 in Aberdeen Harbour.
Seen behind the Curlew is most probably the steel fishing trawler Strathairlie (A39) built by Hall, Russell & Co Ltd, Aberdeen in 1905 for Aberdeen Steam Trawling & Fishing Co Ltd. This vessel later served as a minesweeper from 1915-1919 for the Admiralty Service.
The second boat in the row is the wooden fishing trawler Alnwick Castle (KY120) built by William Jarvis in Anstruther in 1895 for The Forth Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. The ship was initially named Copley but was later renamed to Alnwick Castle in 1899. The ship was later broken up in 1922.
The third boat in the row is the wooden fishing trawler Merganser (A740) which was built by James N. Miller & Sons Ltd., in the St. Monance shipyard in 1894. It was registered as A740 in Aberdeen by Henry Alexander circa 1901 and later broken up in 1923.
The final boat in the row on the far right visible in the image is the iron fishing trawler Evening Star (A406) built by J. T. Eltringham & Co in the South Shields shipyard in 1891. Initially named Ella, it was renamed to Golden Monarch by W. H. Dodds in Aberdeen during 1915. It was renamed to Evening Star by W. Hutchinson in Aberdeen during 1920. The boat sank in 1927 in the Firth of Forth.
Based on the above boats, this photograph may date from the very early 1920s. Aberdeen Harbour
3530 A photograph taken in Aberdeen Harbour with a view of multiple docked steam trawlers.
Seen in the image is the fishing trawler Countess Cadogan (A869) built by J. McArthur & Co, Paisley in the Thistle Yard during 1897.
It was first registered in Dublin by The Shannon Development Co Ltd, as a passenger vessel but later came into the possession of Nicholas Cook in Aberdeen during 1917.
While in his ownership it was converted to a fishing trawler and designated A869. It was later broken up in 1927, which thus dates this image to between 1917 and 1927. Matthews' Quay

The image depicts multiple docked fishing vessels with registrations from Kirkcaldy, Methil, Banff, Inverness and Aberdeen.
The last ship in the first row is the fishing liner Sickle (BF1787) which was built by George Innes & Son in 1894 in their Three Creeks yard in Portknockie. It was later broken up in 1919.
Seen in the second row of ships is the Favourite (INS163) owned by W. Cormack. This is an Inverness registered steam drifter which operated from 1907 until it was scrapped in 1937.
The last ship seen in the second row is the fishing drifter Diligence (BF172) built by John Duthie, Sons & Co. in Aberdeen in 1906. Its first owner was George Falconer in Banff which explains the BF designation. After coming into the ownership of Thomas and Andrew Adam in Kirkcaldy it was re-registered with the designation KY164 in 1913. The Diligence was later broken up in 1936.
To the right can seen the steam liner White Rose (A149). A Buckie Advertiser article from 23rd November 1899 mentions it being built for a client in Aberdeen and being towed to the city by its sister ship the Caledonia. It was renamed the Silverna on 8th July 1922. On 14th February 1929 it was sold for breaking up. It was the first steam powered fishing vessel built in the Buckie district.
In front of the White Rose can be seen the Unity (INS450) which was launched from Buckpool in 1896 and belonged to J. Ralph and W. McPherson.
The presence of the Diligence with the designation BF rather than KY suggests that this photograph was taken before 1913 while the presence of the Favourite (INS163) suggests the photograph was taken after 1907. Matthews' Quay

The left of the image contains the ferry terminal structure. To the right of this building, three trawlers sit moored in the foreground.
These vessels are quite possibly Fife-Ness (A377), the Blossom (A9), and Star of the North (A633). All three of these vessels were registered in the area between 1903 and 1915.
A large merchant ship can also be seen along Provost Mathews' Quay. This looks like the steamship St. Sunniva, built in 1887 by Hall Russell for the North of Scotland & Orkney & Shetland Steam Navigation Company Ltd. As their name suggests, the company operated services to the Northern Isles. Beyond Matthews' Quay, Victoria Dock is visible.
The commercial traffic taking up the river and bustling townscape in the distance highlights the merchant trade for which Aberdeen was famed. Point Law
3539 Photograph depicts the construction of some sort of timber pier, railway line and a device running along top of it. photo looking east from Matthew's Quay. Multiple steam trawlers can be seen docked on Point Law in the background. The construction depicted in the photo may be for the purposes of more easily tipping coal onto ships. In the background can be seen the steam trawler A943 Pointer. This ship was built in 1906 by Hall, Russell & Company, Ltd. for Captain William H Burn in Aberdeen and was initially designated as A57. It later came into the ownership of P & J Johnstone in 1938 and was designated as A943. It was later broken up in 1955. Point Law

3580 A photograph of three steam trawlers berthed alongside one another on Regent Quay.
It was taken from the other side of the dock looking north towards the city centre. In the background on the left can be seen the Harbour Office building at 14-16 Regent Quay. It was built in 1883-85 by A. Marshall Mackenzie for the Harbour Board and is still in use today. A bit further back one can also see the Town House clock.
The two visible trawlers are North Queen (A78) and North King (A86), both built in 1906 by Hall, Russell & Co Ltd. for North Line Steam Fishing Co. Ltd.
Both vessels switched owners many times, however the photograph was taken no later than 1920, when their registrations were switched to Granton. Torry
3587 Facing south-west, towards the church hall, this shot shows sailing fishing boats moored mid-stream in the Torry Harbour.
A skiff approaches under partial sail in front of the leading light house. From the right of this lighthouse the edge of a building peeks out with the name "Miller".
David Miller ran a popular spirits shop on the corner of Sinclair Road and Baxter Street. He appears in the Aberdeen Post Office Directories from 1904.
The shop changes hands in 1906 to John P. Miller, a presumed family member.

240 The Ho Sho Maru was the first iron-clad warship in Japan. It was built in 1868 by Aberdeen shipyard Alexander Hall & Co. The gunboat was a barque rigged steamer equipped with two 110-pound and two 60-pound guns on deck. Aberdeen City Libraries hold a number of logbooks from Aberdeen-built ships, including the log book detailing the maiden voyage of the Ho Sho Maru from Aberdeen to Japan.
The vessel was ordered by the Choshu clan and brokered by Fraserburgh born trader and industrialist Thomas Blake Glover. The Choshu were one of the two main actors, with the Satsuma clan, in the rebellion against the Tokugawa Shogunate. The rebellion led to the Meiji Restoration and enormous changes in the political and social structure of Japan. Aberdeen Sailors' Home and Mission
368 The illustrated front cover of the Guide to the Bazaar and Grand Nautical Exhibition of The Aberdeen Sailors' Home and Mission. It was held in aid of a building fund in the Music Hall Buildings on Friday and Saturday, 7th and 8th December, 1900.
The guide was printed by Milne and Hutchison at 64 Netherkirkgate. The cover illustration is signed "R.D.S." - Robert Douglas Strachan (1875-1950). |
