Spring Garden
275 This photo shows the premises of William McKinnon & Co, ironfounders and engineers in Spring Garden, at its junction with Loch Street. The company was founded by William McKinnon in 1798, when they did work for local factories. In the 1860s, they became involved in the production of equipment for coffee, cocoa, rice and sugar plantations. By the 1890s, they employed 170 men, making steam engines, boilers, sugar machinery, as well as machines for polishing granite. Eventually, 90% of their manufacturing was exported; they had agencies in 60 countries worldwide and they produced catalogues in English, French and Spanish. During World War 2, production switched to munitions work, producing shells, mortars and parts for Hercules Aero engines. They appear to have ceased trading around 1992-93. Waterloo Station
641 This photograph shows the corner at the end of Regent Quay in the late 19th century. The building in the centre of the image, with pediment, is the offices of the Great North of Scotland Railway Company and to its left is the entrance to the Waterloo Railway Station.
The railway station was opened by the company on 1st April 1856. It was built to supersede an existing station at Kittybrewster. Waterloo was once the station for all railway passengers and goods going between the city and the north.
Trains coming and going from the south stopped at a nearby, but unconnected station on Guild Street. It had opened two years earlier in 1854 and was operated by rival railway company, the Scottish North-Eastern. Passengers with connecting trains would need to dash along Trinity and Regent Quay or wait for a bus. Connections were not guaranteed.
It took Parliament to settle the differences between the companies. This saw the construction of the Joint Station, opened in November 1867, and the creation of the Denburn Valley Railway. Both Waterloo and Guild Street subsequently became stations for the transport of goods only.
The buildings shown in this photograph were altered and eventually demolished in the 20th century. Remnants of the station can still be seen today in a small yard and the railway line following the old canal path and joining the main tracks heading north at Kittybrewster.
On the right of this image can also be seen an building, likely a goods shed, of the Aberdeen, Newcastle & Hull Steam Company. This passenger ship service was founded in 1865 and had offices at 43 Marischal Street.
The building to the left of Waterloo Station, far left here, was the site of an establishment called Berry's Hotel and served as various pubs until the late 1960s. It looks like it was closed or being refurbished at the time of this photograph.

885 This photograph of Rubislaw Quarry was probably taken some time in the 1880s. At the top of the image can be seen a variety of mechanical lifting devices, thus dating the illustration prior to the introduction of steam cranes and Blondins For over 200 years this quarry provided much of the granite evident in the city landscape of today. The granite was also used for tombstones, shop-fronts and street paving both within and outwith the city boundries. The quarry was nearly 500 feet deep and 900 feet by 750 feet at the top. Alec. C. 1018 Alec. C. Walker, Carrier. This 1910 photograph shows the delivery cart of Alexander C. Walker, who started in business in the 1880's as a dairyman, then became a carrier from his base in Exchange Street. He was better known in the Cults/Culter area as 'Parcel Sandy', since he collected and delivered laundry baskets from the laundry agents. They would send parcels of linen, sheets and clothes into Aberdeen where the large laundry firms were located. On this trip, he also has a barrel, some sacks and a few planks of wood in his load. 2304 In June 1871 a day nursery was established at 13 East North Street for the children of mothers who did laundry and cleaning jobs. It was run by the Aberdeen Association for the Poor, which nowadays is known as Voluntary Services Aberdeen and is Aberdeen's oldest charity. It was for children aged from 6 weeks to 5 years. Prices were one child 3d, nowadays 1p, two children 41/2d, for children from the same family and three for 6d. Prices were increased in 1873 as the nursery was not able to cover its running costs. This did not help and unfortunately the doors closed in May 1874 as it was not feasible for the Association to continue to run it at a loss of £60 a year. A Flower Mission was run instead where volunteers made and brought bouquets of flowers to sick women from the East End and it lasted for twenty years. In 1895-1902 nursery was re-established in the nearby 15-21 Princes Street. This is the site of the first night shelter founded by Mrs Hilda Wernham (1919-2002) in answer to what she saw as the very desperate need of the indigent population in Aberdeen. A justice of the Peace and founding member of the Cyrenians Mrs Wernham was a sparky lady with a social conscience and an ability to inspire others. She managed to persuade business people with her persistence and sense of humour to support the venture. Her enthusiasm and commitment have earned her a place in the history of Aberdeen. Her name lives on at Wernham House (pictured), the first hostel of its kind, established in 1986 at 7 Virginia Street by Aberdeen Cyrenians.

2428 An early 20th century postcard showing Regent Quay and the Aberdeen Harbour Board Office. A Great North of Scotland wagon is also visible.
The prominent location of the new 4-storey Harbour Offices overlooked the Upper and Victoria Docks and the nearby Regent Bridge.
The building was designed by A. Marshall Mackenzie of the Matthews & Mackenzie architectural firm. It was built between 1883 and 1885. In addition to the Harbour Offices the building included warehouses for wholesale merchant, Messrs C. & A. Johnstone.

The construction of the Italian renaissance style building followed the introduction of steam trawling to Aberdeen in around 1882 and the subsequent harbour boom. The building replaced an earlier Harbour Board office, which newspaper articles indicate was near the foot of Marischal Street.
One outstanding feature of the new building is the attractive clock tower. At the time of construction it was described as the only tower in the city with a granite dome. The expense and final form of the tower was a subject of great debate.
The Aberdeen Harbour Trust Port, modern successor to the Harbour Board, occupies the building to this day.
The buildings to the left of the Harbour Offices were demolished in the second half of the 20th century during an extension to Virginia Street. S.S. Intaba
2702 A postcard showing the launch of the steamship Intaba on 6th September 1910. The ship was constructed by Hall, Russell & Company at their York Street yards for John T. Rennie, Son and Company of Aberdeen and London. The launch was watched by a crowd of thousands.
The Intaba was the largest vessel built in Aberdeen at the time. It was 387 feet in length and weighted 4,832 tons. It was designed to transport passengers and cargo, initially between London and the province of Natal in the Union of South Africa. It could accommodate 70 first class passengers and 60 in second class. The ship's name means mountain in Zulu.
The Intaba and passenger liners like it were fundamental to continuing the British colonisation of southern Africa following the Second Boer War (1899-1902). In May 1910 the British Government had unified its existing and newly acquired regional colonies into the Union of South Africa.
The Intaba went on to have a long and varied career, including working trade and pilgrimage routes. It sailed for 43 years, under various names and owners, and in many different parts of the world, before its eventual demolition in Belgium in 1953.
The Aberdeen Built Ships website (link here) gives considerable detail on the ship's history and states that it was renamed twice; as the Waitomo in 1916 and the Englestan in 1927.
Correspondent Ed Fowler notes that the new ship is being maneuvered primarily by two steam paddle tugs, one on either side, and that a smaller screw steamer tug is also in attendance. He suggests one of the paddle tugs may by the Fairweather. It was built by Richard Stobbs, North Sheilds, in 1871 and was stranded in the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour in 1912. 2732 A postcard of Hamilton Place likely dating from the early 20th century. The view looks west from the juntion with Westfield Road. The house on the left foreground appears to be 8 Hamilton Place. A small part of 3 Hamilton Place can be seen across the road.
Correspondent Urlan Wannop, a former resident at 41 Hamilton Place, shared his memories about this place:
"My family lived in Hamilton Place between 1935 and 1948. The trees have since been removed, but on warm summer evenings we played ball games in the street before cars became prevalent. The trees stood in for stumps for games of cricket. In wartime, snow clearance for the very few motor cars and steam powered coal delivery wagons meant walls of snow at the pavement edge. I still have weights cast from lead left when all garden railings were removed in an abortive attempt to build tanks and ships for the war effort. (...)
[The] photograph precedes the wartime removal of railings. For historical record, the photograph was possibly taken in the 1920's, judging by the motor car in the background, the presence of the railings and the trees being less fully grown than in the days when they stood in as wickets for street games of cricket.
No sign of the knife grinders, bicycles of visiting French onion sellers nor of the street singer that progressed down Hamilton Place. All disappeared except from my memory.
The wartime Lord Provost, Tommy Mitchell - of Mitchell and Muil, the bakers - lived in a house at the near left; my Headmaster at the Grammar School, JJ Robertson, lived in one at the near right. Like me, he would walk to school down Craigie Loanings". Dee Village Electricity Works
2872 A photograph taken in April 1901 showing the land cleared in preparation for the construction of the Dee Village Electricity Works.
This image was taken from the bottom of Crown Street looking east. Milburn Street is on the right and the now demolished Dee Village Road is on the left. A steam train can be seen on the Wellington Road, later to be South College Street, viaduct in the middle distance.
The premises of Charles R. Fraser, paperhanger and decorator, can be seen in the foreground. Signs on the shop's windows indicate that it is moving the following month to 127A Crown Street.

2888 This photograph shows the Dee Village Electricity Works under construction on 6th January 1903. It shows the combined steam engines and dynamos being installed in the work's engine room.
John S. Reid in Mechanical Aberdeen (1990) explains that, once completed, the engine room, 126 feet long by 62 feet wide, housed eight combined steam engines and dynamos. These enabled the plant to supply 3,810 kilowatts for lighting, heating, power and tramway traction purposes.
Correspondent Ed Fowler suggests the two steam engines and dynamos shown in this image are likely those installed and active in a temporary wooden engine room as the final hall was constructed surrounding it. The generating sets look to be at a higher position than the final layout and would need to have been lowered in due course.

3338 Looking south east towards Albert Quay, not far beyond the extension of the fishmarket. The premises of Andrew Christie, fish curing works, on the corner of Clyde Street, can be seen in the background.
In the foreground bowler-hatted gentlemen are onboard a steam launch, with steam trawlers in the background (A112).
The many spectators on the quayside suggest a special occasion is taking place. Perhaps the relauch of a repaired boat. They stand over the No. 1 Albert Quay pontoon dock. Albert Quay
3339 A high shot looking north east over the Market Street end of Albert Quay and Albert Basin.
Train tracks can be seen heading to the quay's two pontoon docks. Steam trawlers are moored along the quay, including A137 Strathbran.
Across the basin can be seen the then end of the fishmarket on Commercial Road. By the mid-1920s it would be extended along to that quay's graving dock.

3505 This photograph looks northwest across Victoria Dock from Blaikie's Quay.
Featured prominently is a locomotive marked GNSR (Great North of Scotland Railway). It looks like an Aveling and Porter steam shunter. It is pulling wagons loaded with sacks, most likely contain coal. Workers for the train can be seen riding and walking alongside it.
A movable shed, street lamp and signalling device can also be seen on the left of the image.
In the background, across the dock, the front elevation of 33 Regent Quay is visible. This long and narrow, neo-classical building, located at the bottom of Marischal Street, was designed by Robert Gordon Wilson and was built in 1901-02 as a harbour branch for the Aberdeen Town and County Bank. 3528 A photograph looking south east towards the Upper Dock across the junction of Guild Street, Trinity Quay and Market Street.
Multiple trawlers are moored in the dock. Onlookers can be seen alongside the docked boats. An unidentified steam vessel larger than the rest can be seen in the far left in the background.
The first ship on the left of the row is the steel fishing trawler Curlew (A906). This ship was built in the Panmure Yard belonging to Dundee Shipbuilders Co. Ltd., in 1897. In 1903 this ship was registered A906 in Aberdeen. The Curlew was wrecked in 1922 in Aberdeen Harbour.
Seen behind the Curlew is most probably the steel fishing trawler Strathairlie (A39) built by Hall, Russell & Co Ltd, Aberdeen in 1905 for Aberdeen Steam Trawling & Fishing Co Ltd. This vessel later served as a minesweeper from 1915-1919 for the Admiralty Service.
The second boat in the row is the wooden fishing trawler Alnwick Castle (KY120) built by William Jarvis in Anstruther in 1895 for The Forth Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. The ship was initially named Copley but was later renamed to Alnwick Castle in 1899. The ship was later broken up in 1922.
The third boat in the row is the wooden fishing trawler Merganser (A740) which was built by James N. Miller & Sons Ltd., in the St. Monance shipyard in 1894. It was registered as A740 in Aberdeen by Henry Alexander circa 1901 and later broken up in 1923.
The final boat in the row on the far right visible in the image is the iron fishing trawler Evening Star (A406) built by J. T. Eltringham & Co in the South Shields shipyard in 1891. Initially named Ella, it was renamed to Golden Monarch by W. H. Dodds in Aberdeen during 1915. It was renamed to Evening Star by W. Hutchinson in Aberdeen during 1920. The boat sank in 1927 in the Firth of Forth.
Based on the above boats, this photograph may date from the very early 1920s. Point Law
3570 This shot has been taken along Point Law and features a bustling fish market scene.
Horse-driven carts carry supplies down the street, and steam drifters are moored alongside. Past the harbour, the hills by Greyhope Road are visible.
One of the steam drifters appears to be the Agnes Dickson (A227). She was owned by Adam Dickson and graced the Aberdeen Harbour between 1909 and 1914 under this name and number in mariner almanacs.
The presence of the Agnes Dickson suggests this photograph dates from that approximate period. Regent Quay
3578 One of the two plates depicting a pannier tank shunting engine.
It appears to be 0-4-0ST model locomotive built in 1925 by Andrew Barclay to work at the Aberdeen Corporation Gas Works, as indicated on its side. It was employed there until it was replaced by diesel power in 1964.
The locomotives transported coal from the harbour to the gas works. As the railway ran alongside public roads they were fitted with side skirts which covered their motions.
The locomotive has been restored as a static exhibit at the Grampian Transport Museum in Alford, Aberdeenshire.
In the background can be seen the businesses of George Bissett & Son, engineer and blacksmith at the entrance to Sugarhouse Lane, M. Craigmile, tobacconist at 73 Regent Quay, another tobacconist and grocer with the surname Wattie, and the offices of the Aberdeen, Newcastle, and Hull Steam Co., Ltd at number 79. This latter business was at the junction with Commerce Street. |
