Brig o' Balgownie over the River Don
168 An engraving showing the Brig o' Balgownie over the River Don from a drawing by James Giles. The inscription in the bottom right indicates that the engraving was printed at the Deaf and Dumb Institution.
The title of this engraving describes the Brig o' Balgownie as the Bridge of Don. This is due to it serving as the main bridge over the river until the construction of the bridge known today as the Bridge of Don in 1827-30 by engineers John Smith and Thomas Telford.
This image likely looks south east along the river, towards the bridge, from between Tam's Hole and Black Nook. This was an important salmon fishing area in the past. Some information on the catching of fish on the river is given in the book The Annals of Aberdeen (Volume II, 1818) by William Kennedy, on pages 206-211. The Linn o' Dee, c.1880
359 The Linn o'Dee is 65 miles west of Aberdeen and over 1200 feet above sea level. It is about a mile west of Inverey, the last settlement on Deeside and marks the end of the public road. The stone bridge which replaced a wooden structure was opened by Queen Victoria in September 1857. Salmon can often be seen here leaping upwards to their spawning grounds. The area is still a popular tourist attraction with views of the Cairngorms in the distance. Linn is a Scottish word for a rocky gorge with pools. Cotton Croft
1782 This photograph looks north on Clifton Road in Woodside, Aberdeen. The buildings on the left of the image were known as Cotton Croft. They are visible on the first Ordnance Survey maps of 1869 (Aberdeen Sheet LXXV.6). They were roughly located across the road from where Hilton Avenue now joins Clifton Road.
On 8th January 1914 Robert Stewart, resident of Cotton Croft, was convicted at Aberdeen Court of taking an "unclean salmon" from the River Don below Grandholm Mills. He was admonished and dismissed on account of his youth (Aberdeen Daily Journal, 09/01/1914, p.3).
In February 1916 the Public Health Committee of Aberdeen closed the cottage at Cotton Croft as unfit for habitation (Aberdeen Daily Journal, 17/02/1916 p.2).
The buildings are still present on the OS maps of 1955 (NJ9208SE) and this is likely the broad period from which this images dates. The map also shows the two large trees and the slightly lower housing on the right. The latter is the start of the more recently constructed Greenmore Gardens.
The Cotton Croft buildings were eventually demolished and replaced with modern housing. Hay's Views of Aberdeen

The view shows salmon fishing in the river and linen bleaching activities on the Torry side.
The spires of the South Parish Church, on Belmont Street, St. Nicholas Kirk and the Tolbooth can be seen on the skyline. The Castle Hill Barracks is also clearly visible. The River Dee, 1895
1999 During the severe winter of 1895, the River Dee was frozen due to the extremely low temperatures recorded. All outdoor work was forced to cease and it was estimated that between 2-3000 people were thrown out of work.
y 9th February the local press recorded that temperatures had dropped to 8 degrees F.
Large crowds were on the banks of the river and continued to cross from side to side on the ice. By 19th February the Dee was frozen as far west as Cults, where hundreds of people were skated because the ice was much smoother there. The salmon fishers at the Bridge of Dee managed to break through the ice and found it to be at least 12 inches thick. The thaw set in two days later, when the lower part of the Dee between the estuary and Victoria Bridge was almost free of ice. The 'City of London'
2006 The 'City of London' was launched in April 1844 from the yard of Robert Napier at Govan on the River Clyde, having been built for the Aberdeen Steam Navigation Company and designed by John Duthie, Jnr of Aberdeen. She was regarded as 'the largest and most magnificent iron steamship ever yet built in any part of Her Majesty's dominions' - with the exception of 'Great Britain'. She was constructed entirely of iron, but her deck and the ornamental parts of her cabins were fitted out in oak. She was 231 feet long and measured 1116 tons, and was powered by two engines each of 130 horsepower. This would make her one of the fastest vessels on the Aberdeen - London voyage. She had berths for 110 passengers, with spacious, elegant cabins. The salon was furnished with sofas and chairs covered in green Genoa velvet, while ornamental coloured glass and mirrors produced a warm light.
Her first voyage to London was in July 1844, when her cargo included 600 boxes of salmon and 215 cattle. Her return voyage was completed in under 38 hours - five hours faster than any other vessel had achieved.
By 1870, she was taken off the run, and disposed of. A new 'City of London' was launched in 1871, and she was an even faster vessel and used about 100 tons of coal on each return journey. 82-86 Union Street

Multiple ships are registered in Aberdeen and Banff, such as Ebenezer (A892) belonging to Thomas Davidson, Callykhan (BF122) of J. Murray & others, and Tarbat Ness (A203) and Buchan Ness (A204) which belonged to the Girdleness Herring Drifting Company Ltd. based in Aberdeen.
Buchan Ness (A204) was built in 1908 and over the years had its name and registration changed a couple of times. In 1912 it was renamed to F.H.S. and moved to Yarmouth for John F. C. Salmon. Then, in 1929 it was moved to Banff and renamed again to Thealby for John Wood.
The wood screw steamer Vine (A279) also has an interesting story. It was built in 1900 by Forbes & Birnie based in Peterhead for a fish salesman from Aberdeen Thomas Davidson. An article written in The Buchan Observer of 20th March 1900 describes a celebratory banquet in honour of the newly built ship as it was leaving Peterhead to Aberdeen, where it would have a steam engine installed. The vessel was described as an "extraordinary success" due to its appearance and speed.
Unfortunately, in 1915, the ship was captured by enemy submarine and sunk with gunfire 30 miles north-east from Out Skerries, Shetland. All crew returned home safely.

391 A large advertisement poster for the Scottish Salmon and White Fish Company. As indicated on the poster, the company also went by the abbreviated name of Scotsal.
The poster features illustrations of the different types of location the company caught their fish; on the beach, on rivers and in coastal waters. There is also a map identifying all the company's fishing locations.
Records for the Scottish Salmon and White Fish Company (1919-1989) are held by the Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives. Their catalogue entry states that their Aberdeen premises were located at South Esplanade East, between the River Dee and Albert Basin, from 1920-1991.
A note at the bottom of the poster indicates that it was created by G. & W. Fraser Ltd, a lithography company from Aberdeen. Our copy of the poster at Aberdeen Local Studies is framed and a tag on the rear of the frame suggests it was sold by William Simpson, an original etching merchant, from Aberdeen. |
