This famous local retailer first started trading from a small shop at 185 George Street in 1894. As business flourished, other outlets were opened in the city.
As his business grew, Isaac Benzie (1864-1926) brought his interests together under one roof in these department store type premises at 143-167 George Street in 1924.
In 1955, the store was acquired by the House of Fraser and traded as Arnott's before closing down in 1986.
