Description
A photographic postcard of the Convalescent Home in Cults. A convalescent home was a short-term residential facility providing medical and rehabilitative care for people recovering from surgery, illness, or injury. Cults Convalescent Home, also known as Aberdeen Royal Infirmary Convalescent Home, was designed by the firm W. & J. Smith and Kelly and opened in 1897. Aberdeen City Council's Historic Environment Record website states that when built it replaced the Lochhead convalescent home (dating from 1874). The new facility in Cults had provision for 29 patients and live-in nursing staff. Cults Convalescent Home closed in 1964 and was sold in 1969. Between 1972 and 1996 it was the campus for the Aberdeen American School and subsequently became the Aberdeen Waldorf School, which closed in 2014. The postcard was published by Valentine & Sons Ltd. of Dundee and London. This copy was sent to a Mrs. J. Irvine of Rathen, near Fraserburgh and features a long "check in" style message from someone called Angus who was staying in the home. The card was sent from Cults, Aberdeenshire at 9:45 AM on the 17th April, 1952, per the post office stamp, on top of a King George VI stamp.
