Title
125 Treasures from our Collections - November 2016
Description
Our first excellent treasure this month is the memoirs and plans of builder, John Morgan. He was a prominent Aberdeen resident and worked with many of the city's well-known architects. The next treasure looks at an inter-war Community Library that was never to be. A series of drawings by city architect, A. B. Gardner, of the proposed Linksfield Branch offers an insight into civic design of the time and the history of Aberdeen's public libraries. 2016 marks 80 years since the opening of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary at Foresterhill. To mark this occasion we next consider The Silver Book, a volume created to raise funds for city's pioneering Joint Hospital Scheme. 13th November is Remembrance Sunday 2016. It is the national day for people to remember and honour those who have died in the armed forces. To mark this day we have selected two treasures from our collection. The first is the library's copy of the Aberdeen Roll of Honour from WWI. Our final treasure is Corporal H. Robertson's handwritten Diary of the Battle of the Somme. This remarkable item offers an insight into the moving and often traumatic experiences of soldiers on the front line. Find out more about all of these items in the Treasures from our Collections interactive exhibition on the touchscreens in the Central Library, Airyhall, Mastrick and Tillydrone Libraries.
