Treasures from our Collections - March 2016
8th March is International Women's Day. It is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. To mark this excellent occasion we have chosen as a treasure a record by one of Aberdeen's most famous women, Mary Garden.

One of the highlights of Spectra, Aberdeen's Festival of Light, in February was the terrific Face of Innovation artwork projected onto the Mitchell Tower in the Marischal College quadrangle. Our next treasure is a ground floor architectural plan of the building by its designer, Archibald Simpson.

Simpson also designed the Mechanics' Institute buildings on Market Street. This was the site of Aberdeen's first free lending library. To mark 130 years this month since the opening of the lending library we have chosen to highlight a bound volume of its first ever catalogue from 1886.

On 3rd March Aberdeen City Libraries celebrates World Book Day. The main aim of this yearly event is to encourage children to enjoy reading. We have chosen this opportunity to showcase our collection of Victorian children's literature and in particular a first edition volume of poems beautifully illustrated by Kate Greenaway.

Our final treasure celebrates the many visits the British Science Association have made to Aberdeen over the years. Particular focus is given to the 1934 visit and the Jubilee Luncheon that took place in the Central Library.
