G. W. Wilson & Co.'s advertising stamps c.1887
Prominent nineteenth century photographer George Washington Wilson had these stamps created to celebrate and advertise a new partnership with his three sons in 1887. The portrait in the centre of the stamp is of Wilson and the initials of the four partners can be seen in the corners. Roger Taylor in his 1981 work on Wilson reports that the postal authorities took exception to the stamps' likeness to the real thing and ordered them to be withdrawn.
