During the severe winter of 1895, the River Dee was frozen due to the extremely low temperatures recorded. All outdoor work was forced to cease and it was estimated that between 2-3000 people were thrown out of work.
y 9th February the local press recorded that temperatures had dropped to 8 degrees F.
Large crowds were on the banks of the river and continued to cross from side to side on the ice. By 19th February the Dee was frozen as far west as Cults, where hundreds of people were skated because the ice was much smoother there. The salmon fishers at the Bridge of Dee managed to break through the ice and found it to be at least 12 inches thick. The thaw set in two days later, when the lower part of the Dee between the estuary and Victoria Bridge was almost free of ice.
