In 1970 the Aberdeen Construction Group announced the closure of the city's most famous granite quarry. The company stated that no worthwhile rock had been won at Rubislaw in the two years previous. Thus ended almost 200 years of quarrying at the site.
Local resident John A. Souter has very kindly shared with Aberdeen Local Studies his photographs taken during the final days of operation at the quarry. Rubislaw was the last quarry in the city to close so these photographs offer a valuable look at the final days of a once great local industry.
