Title
Rector at Students' Union
Description
A photograph showing Aberdeen University Rector, Admiral Sir Edward Evans (1880-1957) and Gray's School of Art teacher Robert Sivell (1888-1958) viewing the murals in the new Students' Union buildings on the Gallowgate, which had been opened earlier in the year. The photograph and accompanying caption are from the Bon-Accord and Northern Pictorial newspaper of the 18th May 1939, page 23. The mural, decorating the theatre hall of the new buildings, was titled "The Pageant of Life" and was the work of Sivell and three of his graduate students. As stated in the caption, Evans had given a public lecture in the Music Hall to raise funds for the murals. This illustrated talk was on the subject of Evans' experiences in the Antarctic with Captain Scott in 1911 and took place in December 1938.
