Description
Alexanders Distributors (Aberdeen), Ltd., motor cycle specialists, at 339 Union Street. At 343, within the ornate doorway in the centre was located the following businesses and organisations: The North-East Savings Committee; Scottish Savings Committee; Associated Women's Friendly Society; Department of Health for Scotland - Regional Medical Office; Helen Bagrie, costumière; James M. Farrell, tailor; Johnston, Reid & Co., office furnishers; E. Gilhooley, N.D., D.O., D.C.; The Practical Nature Cure Centre; and Miss C. G. Middleton. Crissy G. (Christian Glenn) Middleton (1902-1967) and Edward Gilhooley (1903-1959), both osteopaths, were practitioners associated with the Aberdeen Nature Cure Clinic. Initially set-up at 54 Castle Street, a local newspaper of the time reports the aim of this institution to be that "the poorer children of Aberdeen should be given the benefits of osteopathy, spinal manipulation, advice and dietetics, water treatment and, if possible, ultra violet ray treatment." (<i>Press & Journal</i>, 22nd January 1936, page 9). Middleton and Gilhooley were married in 1936 and went on to operate a practice at 20 Queen's Road. Returning to this image, at 345 Union Street is Farquharson & Co., Ltd., a grocer and wine merchant. This photograph was taken in around 1937.
