Title
125 Treasures from our Collections - December 2016
Description
Our guest treasure this month is the fantastic photographic archive of Aberdeen Journals Ltd. To showcase this wonderful collection the publisher of The Press and Journal and The Evening Express have shared with us a selection of images of Christmases gone by in Aberdeen city. Staying on the Yuletide theme, our next treasure is our collection of Bon-Accord and Northern Pictorial Christmas Annuals. As you would expect with the Bon-Accord these volumes are packed full of historic photos and local events and feature beautifully illustrated front covers. Check out our treasures from June 2015 to see the special summer holiday editions. This month also marks 110 years since the opening of His Majesty's Theatre. To celebrate our superb neighbour we are showcasing some of the material relating to the theatre that we have collected over the years, with a particular focus on theatrical posters and programmes. On 14 December 1911 the Norwegian Roald Amundsen lead the first successful expedition to the South Pole. Our next suitably wintry treasure is the library service's collection of historic reference works on the subject of Polar exploration. Christmas is the time of giving, but what should one get for that friend who has everything - like Queen Mary, wife of George V, for example? The answer is, of course, perhaps the most extravagant doll's house ever constructed. Take a look at our two volumes detailing this extraordinary creation - Queen Mary's Doll House. Our library treasure for this month delves into the history of Ferryhill and Torry Branch Reading Rooms. Find out more about all of these items in the Treasures from our Collections interactive exhibition on the touchscreens in the Central Library, Airyhall, Mastrick and Tillydrone Libraries. If you have any questions or comments about the exhibition please use the comment button or get in touch at localstudies@aberdeencity.gov.uk.
