Title
125 Treasures from our Collections - October 2016
Description
From 17 to 26 October 2016, the Aberdeen Film Festival takes place in ACT Aberdeen and Woodend Barn. To celebrate the festival and all things cinematic this month we are taking another trip into Aberdeen City Libraries' film related material. The Local Studies collection contains programmes for the Aberdeen Film Society from the period of 1949 to 1954. Our next treasure in this month of Halloween is the appropriately spooky themed, 19th century periodical Castle Spectre. The creation of an eccentric Victorian family living in Mackie Place, it featured amateur poetry, literature, and social and religious commentary. Take a closer look, if you dare! Both Northfield and Mastrick Libraries opened during the month of October in 1955 and 1957 respectively. Next we dig deep into the library's collection of photographs, plans and news cuttings to trace the early history of the libraries. This month also sees the eleventh DanceLive festival from Citymoves Dance Agency. It takes place in Aberdeen from 14 to 25 October. It looks set to be a diverse and thought-provoking series of events and to get into the dancing spirit our next treasure is the library's Cosmo Mitchell Collection. Our final treasure this month marks 90 years since the formation of the Aberdeen Magical Society. We look at the life and times of one of the 19th century's greatest magicians, Aberdeen's own "Wizard of the North", John Henry Anderson. In particular we are showcasing a rare edition of his Hand-book of Natural Magic. Find out more about all of these items in the Treasures from our Collections interactive exhibition on the touchscreens in the Central Library, Airyhall, Mastrick and Tillydrone Libraries. If you have any questions or comments about the exhibition please use the comment button or get in touch at localstudies@aberdeencity.gov.uk.
