Title
Treasures from our Collections - December 2015
Description
In July 2017 Aberdeen City Libraries will celebrate 125 years since the Central Library opened to the public. Each month, we are unveiling five treasures from our varied collections - some of which have never before been on public display! December treasures Hans Christian Andersen wrote 'The Snow Queen' in 1844. In December 2015 storyteller Grace Banks and artist Laura Reid combine to present a new dimension to the Andersen classic at the Central Library. To celebrate this performance we have chosen to highlight an edition of Andersen's second autobiography - The True Story of My Life. Weather is an inescapable part of this time of year. During its history Aberdeen has seen some challenging snowstorms - many images of which can be found on this website. Our second treasure for December is the library's collection of historical meteorological records. Winter in Aberdeen also saw the Public Library's special series of lectures for juvenile borrowers. View our selection of admission tickets to learn more about this popular annual event and the librarian behind the programme, G M Fraser. Early in December the Central Library was pleased to host the Annual General Meeting of the UK Patent Library Network. Our next treasure highlights Aberdeen City Libraries as one of the 15 libraries and information centres providing intellectual property information across the country. Lastly it would not be Christmas without a pantomime. Our final treasure looks at the history of this popular entertainment, with a focus on the first pantomime performed at His Majesty's Theatre, Sweet Red Riding Hood. If you have any questions or comments about the exhibition please get in touch at localstudies@aberdeencity.gov.uk
