The Royal Athenaeum

During its glorious age, the Royal Athenaeum was one of Aberdeen best-known places to eat.

The building, located on Castle Street, has always made been a perfect end to Union Street. Built in 1822 by Archibald Simpson (1790-1847), the building was designed as a newsroom for its first owner, Alexander Brown, bookseller in Aberdeen who had just become Provost. At this time, Brown hoped that his library would become a rendezvous for all wealthier citizens.
