Aberdeen photographers
When it comes to Aberdeen and photography the big name is George Washington Wilson. He was a national pioneer and became the official photographer of the Royal Family. However, beyond Wilson photography was a major industry and artistic endeavour in Aberdeen and was practiced by all manner of individuals.

A library user very kindly donated a small collection of photographic portraits dating from the early 20th Century to Aberdeen Local Studies. This short online exhibition will use these images to look at some of the lesser known photographers active in Aberdeen during this period. Sadly, not all the photographs and their takers can be identified but they can still tell us about life and photography in Aberdeen in times past.

The photographers featured in this collection are only a small sample of a large industry. For example, in the Aberdeen Post-Directory for 1913-1914 there are 26 photographic businesses listed.

If you have any historic Aberdeen photographs or information on practitioners that you would like to share with the wider public then get in touch with us at localstudies@aberdeencity.gov.uk.
