Title
Aberdeen Market: a photographic tour
Description
This exhibition of photographs by Roddy Millar provides a tour of the third incarnation of the Aberdeen Market building. This version of Aberdeen Market was opened to the public on Wednesday 6th November 1974. Its demolition, to make way for a new development, begun in March 2022. It had closed to the public in March 2020, initially due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The photographs in this exhibition, which mostly show the building's interior, were taken between 26/02/2019 and 27/08/2021. Though most were taken on two quiet mid-week mornings in February 2019. This exhibition, starting on Union Street and ending at the site's main entrance on Market Street, records some of the now vanished architecture, sights and businesses within the bygone city centre building. Some of the shown businesses have since moved to new premises. Aberdeen City Council sees the redevelopment of the Aberdeen Market site as a critical component in its City Centre Masterplan. This aims to re-establish the central role of Union Street in the life of the city, strengthen links between north and south and create a destination for shopping and other city centre activities.
