Old Aberdeen

A reproduced engraving showing the skyline of Old Aberdeen. The image looks north from around the lands of Sunnyside Farm. In the foreground can be seen two agricultural labourers. On the skyline, going left to right, is the circular Powis Hermitage, on a hill, with its small spire, the twin spires of St. Machar Cathedral in the far distance, the tower of the Old Town House at the end of the High Street, which is protruding above the southern elevation of St. Mary's United Free Church. Moving back along the High Street, the south facing front elevation, with bow windows, of Powis Lodge can be seen above the line of trees. The crown tower of King's College is across the street. The two minarets of the Powis Gateway are just next to it. Further along are the crenelations of Cromwell's Tower. The tower on the far left of the image may be Dunbar's Tower. The minaret gateway was finished in 1834 and this image likely dates from around that period.

King's College

The University of Aberdeen's King's College Chapel in Old Aberdeen during winter. King's College, named for King James IV, was founded in 1495. The Chapel is considered, along with the Ivy Tower, to be one of the oldest surviving parts of the university. It dates from about 1498 - 1509.

Marischal College

Marischal College, University of Aberdeen, on Broad Street. These buildings were replaced by those designed by Archibald Simpson in the 1840's.

The old gateway on Broad Street to Marischal College with the coat of arms of George Keith, Fifth Earl Marischal above it. This was demolished in 1890 to allow for the extension and frontage of Marischal College, which opened in 1906.

Old College Gateway on Broad Street

The Old College Gateway on Broad Street, leading to Marischal College. It was demolished in 1904 to make way for the new frontage to Marischal College. It was surmounted by the coat of arms of George Keith, 5th Earl Marischal, founder of the College.

Marischal College, University of Aberdeen

Marischal College, University of Aberdeen, Broad Street. The front of Marischal College as seen on this postcard was built between 1903 and 1906 and designed by Alexander Marshall MacKenzie. At the right are the tower of the North Church (converted to the Arts Centre) and the spire of Greyfriars Church.

Marischal College

Marischal College dated c.1906. The view overlooks the Guestrow area which would become part of a slum clearance scheme in the 1930's although Provost Skene's House, the turretted building in the foreground, would survive. The sparkling Kemnay granite of the newly completed frontage to the College stands out clearly. At the right are the tower of the North Church, now Aberdeen Arts Centre, and the spire of Greyfriars Church.
