A portrait of artist George Jamesone (1589/90 - 1644). Born in Aberdeen, Jamesone was the first prominent British-born portrait painter. He served an eight year apprenticeship with decorative painter John Anderson in Edinburgh which began in 1612. In 1607 he had inherited his house, now demolished, on Schoolhill from his father. He married Isobel Tosche around 1625. From 1633 until his death his practice was primarily based in Edinburgh.
