125 Treasures from our Collections - June 2016
The first treasure of the month is our collection of programmes from the famous Cooke's Royal Circus. John Henry Cooke was born in New York 180 years ago this month. His circus became a popular and well established entertainment in Aberdeen.

The Aberdeen and North East of Scotland Music Festival was founded in 1909 and is the longest running event of this kind in the city. It takes place in June every year and to celebrate the festival for our second treasure we have chosen signed editions by a key figure in Scottish traditional music, James Scott Skinner.

Our next treasure salutes Armed Forces Day, which takes place on 25 June. During WWI Princess Mary was involved in a number of activities to support those affected by the war. One project was our next treasure, the Princess Mary's Gift Book. It brought together popular authors and artists of the day in order to raise money for the Work for Women fund.

On 11 June the Queen will take part in the Trooping the Colour ceremony to commemorate her official birthday. This year she became the longest ever reigning British Monarch. In celebration of this our fourth treasure is a selection of local material relating to the coronation including the City of Aberdeen Coronation Celebrations Programme.

Our library focused treasure for the month looks back to a time when the Central Library had its own bindery and skilled craftspeople were employed maintaining the condition of the book stock.

In addition to a bindery, you might not know that when it opened in 1892 the Central Library had an ornate spiral staircase that allowed staff to travel between floors. To help us celebrate our history, Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums, who now hold the dismantled staircase, have kindly lent us a sectional tread to exhibit.
