The Royal Athenaeum, Restaurant and Grill room
1960s
7, Union Street - Aberdeen
Here is an advert for the Royal Athenaeum, after its refurbishment in the 1960s. "For generations this famous restaurant has been familiarly known as "Jimmie Hay's". It has a reputation for courteous and unobtrusive service, an atmosphere suited to the good food and fine wines served here, and its Aberdeen's only first clasee licensed restaurant".

However, during the night of August 13th 1973, the Royal Athenaeum was ravaged by fire, apparently due to an electrical fault. Following a long period of uncertainty about its fate, the site was acquired by Corner House Hotels Ltd.
Our cuttings collection keeps trace of the tragic fire which destroyed the building in 1973. Do not hesitate to visit us if you wish learn more about this incident and the events following it.
