Granite yard
Local historian A. G. Duthie has been in touch to suggest that this photograph most likely shows a granite yard. Slabs of the rock can be seen by the wooden fence and the men are standing near small sheerleg cranes.

There is a little bit of uncertainty about the exact location shown in this image. Here at the library we initially had it identified as Old Deeside Road. Judging by the visible buildings we believe the image looks south west from a granite yard located between Bloomfield Road and Balmoral Road.

The tenements and cottage in the background would be those on the east side of the Hardgate that can be seen on old OS maps. These were likely demolished to make way for the Gairn/Balmoral housing developments.
