Correspondent Ed Fowler has provided the following further information on the image: Despite the name on this plan of John Smeaton's Harbour it seems to be more of a record of what existed in 1787 rather than a proposal for grand alterations. Some interesting names appear like Blackey Pool at the end of the then Navigation Channel to the Town Quay which is lined with Navigation Stakes on the Inches side. Scott's Burn spill water channel opposite the Raik Fishing is simply referred to as a Burn. Footdee Village, Ropery and Pottery adjacent to the Pochraw Beach and beyond is the old Pocra Pier and the Blockhouse. Point Law is shown as a large sand and beach Inche with navigation stakes on its south side as far as the old Torry Pier and Pool. The Greyhope Road from Torry Village is described as the road to the Quarries. The Old Torry Bulwark seems to be due for extension towards the intended North Pier end. Work actually started on the pier in January 1775 and was completed on 19th October 1780. This plan is dated some 7 years after the Pier was complete.
