Description
An 1887 group portrait of workers at Sandilands Chemical Works. John Miller established his chemical business in 1848 and for generations "Stinky Miller's" was the source of well-known smells down at the beach. "Tools of the trade" are seen in the hands of these workers, who are mainly blacksmiths and labourers. The 1880s maintenance workforce consisted of coopers, blacksmiths, lead burners, joiners, masons and labourers. Sandilands Chemical Works was situated between the Gasworks and Garvock Wynd (north to south) and Miller Street and Links Road (west to east).
