Title
Treasure 115: Rules of the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club
Description
As the days get longer and the weather becomes fairer (we hope), many of us will look to the outdoors for leisure pursuits, and the sport of golfing is one such activity that has long been enjoyed in Scotland. To celebrate the sport, one of our treasures this month is a copy of a Book of Rules from the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, dated 1921. Originally known as the Society for Golfers in Aberdeen, most sources give 1780 as the date that the Aberdeen Golf Club first came into existence. The first official golf tournament in Aberdeen, organised by the Golf Club was held in April 1880, with 44 amateur participants, however the Aberdeen Journal records that a tournament 'with professionals' took place on Aberdeen Links on October 16 1872; and it was stated that even before this date the course was famous for golfers.
