Correspondent Ed Fowler has been in touch with the following comprehensive description of what can be seen in this image: "This view of the lower Dee's new channel is taken from Balnagask. In the Foreground are a number of Torry fishing luggers dragged up on the river's south bank. Top-right is the Castlehill Barracks and below it Virginia Street and the Sugarhouse gable end on Regents Quay. Masts of sailing ships in the Victoria Dock lead to the North Church Steeple visible on the skyline. The chasm between the Buildings is Marischal Street showing the facade of Archibald Simpson's North of Scotland Bank, followed on the skyline by the Tolbooth spire, Marischal College peeks above Municipal Buildings and clock tower. The next break in the Buildings is Market Street leading down to the Post Office and the Cross Quay at the end of the Upper Dock with more ships. Masts and sawmills are present on the Inches. This quay road is in the process of being extended to form what will become Lower Market Street. At the end of the Cross Quay there appears to be a temporary bridge where infilling the River's old north channel is still likely going on to form what will be Palmerston Quay which will cross the end of the Albert Basin as yet to be completed. The Waverley Hotel facade stands in front of the long roof of the Guild Street Caledonian Station. The Mither Kirk spire burned Down in 1874 which may well date this image. The West St Nicholas Church in Belmont Street is next on the Skyline with the Triple Kirks spire beyond. In the middle ground is what will become Albert Quay and the North Esplanade East leading to Point Law, which already has structures built on it. A much used diagonal pathway leads across from the temporary bridge to the construction site with removed spoil in the background. Beyond the spoil is what may be a barge or lighter floating in the intended fishing dock."
