Lord Provost Collie at Aberdeen Joint Station
In the 1980s, long distance train travel started to become popular again. The High Speed Trains on the East Coast route to London were the stars of the new fleet. Lord Provost Collie gave the accelerated "Flying Scotsman" service to London Kings Cross a send-off in June 1981.

Correspondent David Clark sent us the following details:

"This is a rather special photo for me... I was the photographer. I remember the shoot quite well. My father was a staff photographer from the P&J and they'd a request, but had to be passed to an external - I had not long started as a freelance photographer. I took the photo under quite a bit of pressure as I was holding up the London express train - which I think I delayed by 3 or 4 minutes. I then got on a train with a very high up person from ScotRail - but I had no ticket and was a bit worried. When the guard came along he showed the guard a coin like thing on a key ring and the guard was very flustered and subservient."
