Title
Treasures from our Collections - May 2017
Description
Our first treasure this month is our collection of Aberdeen Artist Society exhibition catalogues. This group of local artists, who came together for mutual improvement and annual exhibitions, dates back to 1827 and their catalogues detail a rich and creative history that continues today. May 4th 2017 sees Scotland, England and Wales go to the polls for a local government election. Residents of Aberdeen will vote for councillors in the 13 wards in the city using the Single Transferable Vote system. Our treasure is a therefore timely look at our collection of historical local political cartoons. 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of the Aberdeen's first central railway station. Our related treasure is a plan of the proposed new joint station and associated engineering works, which was published by the Aberdeen Free Press in 1863. Our next treasure is a photograph album documenting the construction of the Aberdeen Corporation Electricity Works at Dee Village and the connected Cable Subway. To make the most of the spring weather, for this month's final treasure from the library's own collections we head outdoors with a copy of Rules from the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club from 1921 and take a swing at the history of the sport in the city. With our guest treasure this month we explore the work of Aberdeen City Council's Design Team (Public Buildings) and their fantastic collection of architectural drawings.
