125 Treasures from our Collections - April 2016
It was 150 years ago in April 1866 that Inverurie became known by its current name. The change was reported in various newspapers, including The Aberdeen Herald. Take a look at our first treasure to discover the history of Aberdeen's upstart, Whig-Radical paper and to read local historian Douglas Lockhart's account of how the town came to be known as Inverurie.

What is Aberdeen's Central Library missing? A large neon sign, of course! To mark the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design we are pleased to display a drawing by the General Electric Company Ltd, dated 14 March 1939, showing a proposed bright green sign for the front of the library.

April 7th is World Health Day. To mark the day we have selected a poster from our collection advertising an exhibition held in The Music Hall in 1912. It was on the subject of tuberculosis which was a grave health concern at the time. Take a look at this this treasure to learn about the city's 'War on Consumption'.

In April we are encouraging everyone to 'ReaDiscover' their local Library! The themes of this initiative are Innovation, Architecture, Design, Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths. In the spirit of scientific inquiry for our next treasure we have selected a third edition of A.S.E. Ackermann's early 20th century celebrated de-bunker Popular Fallacies Explained and Corrected.

Lastly, April 2016 marks the 400 year anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. In honour of the Bard we have chosen a mid-19th century art book called Heroines of Shakspeare.
