The Royal Athenaeum
During its glorious age, the Royal Athenaeum was one of Aberdeen best-known places to eat.

The building, located on Castle Street, has always made been a perfect end to Union Street. Built in 1822 by Archibald Simpson (1790-1847), the building was designed as a newsroom for its first owner, Alexander Brown, bookseller in Aberdeen who had just become Provost. At this time, Brown hoped that his library would become a rendezvous for all wealthier citizens.

Learn more about its history by exploring this online exhibition. It follows the display organised at Local Studies service during the Scottish Local History Week 2015 whose the theme was "Food and Drink".
