Treasures from our Collections - January 2016
The Scottish Government has designated 2016 as the year of Innovation, Architecture and Design. The initiative, led by VisitScotland, is an opportunity to celebrate the country's achievements in these fields and will include a number of nationwide activities and events. Our first treasure of 2016, Hay's Isometrical View of Aberdeen 1850, showcases the city's historic architecture and was created by one of Aberdeen's great innovators, George Washington Wilson.

If you are feeling the need to go somewhere warmer and drier, our second treasure of the month is an album of George Washington Wilson & Co.'s photographs from South Africa. The volume is one of many compiled by the photographer's son, Charles Wilson.

Our third treasure is an example from the library's collection of historic family trees. The Pedigree of the Cruickshanks of Stracathro dates from 1847 and was compiled by E. G. G. Cruickshank. Take a look at the accompanying notes to learn about the provenance of this historic document and the troubling past of Scottish wealth.

Every year on the 25th January Scotland celebrates another of its great innovators with Burn's Night. Our next treasure is a volume from the late 18th century entitled A Selection of Original Scots Songs in Three Parts. Edited by prominent Austrian composer Franz Joseph Haydn, the volume features a setting of Burn's song My Heart Is in the Highlands.

Our final treasure is the Notes and Jottings of G. M. Fraser, City Librarian and local history expert. Peer inside to see why Fraser was described as Aberdeen's "Principal Historian".
