Treasures from our Collections - February 2016
In February 2016 Aberdeen City Libraries are going all out for science. On the 6th, National Libraries Day, we are launching the country wide reading promotion ReaDiscover in Aberdeen. Bestselling author Alex Gray is visiting the Central Library to discuss the psychology and science behind her crime fiction. ReaDiscover aims to encourage people to explore science and innovation using library resources.

One such resource is Local Studies extensive collection of fantastical science fiction by Aberdeen author J. T. McIntosh.

The National Libraries Day, which aims to promote libraries all across the country, is also the occasion to showcase a photograph showing the queue for the first ever Library book sale held in the Music Hall, in 1979.

In February, the Aberdeen Learning Festival provides learning opportunities in the city. For this reason, we choose to focus on the education for women, undertaken by the Aberdeen Ladies' Educational Association around 1880-1890s. Some of the minutes books include annual reports and adverts for the lectures offered.

Another of this month's treasures is the unique and fascinating collection of postcards produced by Valentine and Sons from 1825.

To finish, 2016 is the year of Innovation, Architecture and Design in Scotland and we will be highlighting some innovative items from our archive and collections throughout the year. This month we are showcasing Aberdeen City Libraries' unique collection of George Kemp lantern slides.
