Artistic Aberdeen
"Aberdeen is the ideal town for the etcher and the black-and-white artist. They do not feel the absence of colour or the seeming monotony of grey granite which requires a colourist of subtle genius to interpret aright." W.S. Percy

In addition to W.S. Percy, this introduction to artistic Aberdeen also features the work of David Reid Alexander, Curtis Green and an unknown artist's take on the Castlegate. William Stratford Percy (born 1872), a well known actor, made most of his sketches of Aberdeen during 1931 and 1932 when he was at His Majesty's Theatre with "Tommy Lorne and His Whoopmakers".

"Wherever he goes on tour, his days are spent in searching out and putting upon board and canvas all that is picturesque in the towns that he visits."

D.R. Alexander was a self-taught pen and ink illustrator who worked as a draper on Upperkirkgate. He is noted in particular for his excellent sketches of 115 local churches.
