Treasures from our Collections - July 2017

This is the final month of our Treasures from our Collections exhibition. We very much hope you have enjoyed the items we have highlighted so far and we have attempted to save some of the best till last!

For our first treasure this month we go on a journey with our old friend George Washington Wilson. A major figure in the history of North East Scotland, he has featured many times in previous months. Our final GWW treasure is a selection of the pioneering photographs he took in the Highlands and Islands.

Our final item from the library archive is a guest book signed by the Queen Mother. She visited the Central Library in 1982 after the completion of major improvements to the building. The treasure's accompanying information also details the modernisation of the library service and the city librarian responsible.

The Central Library is not the only Aberdeen institution to celebrate an impressive birthday this year. 2017 also marks the 145th anniversary of the Tivoli Theatre on Guild Street. To mark this milestone we are displaying a number of historic posters from the venue. Many date back to when establishment was known as Her Majesty's Theatre!

Old as these buildings they are no match for our next items: a collection of charters, concerning the transfer of property, dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries! We are also displaying replicas of Aberdeen City's 1430 armorial seal.

The final treasure from our collection is a fascinating book that offers insight in the bygone, and surprisingly exciting, world of stage coaches. The book, written by Captain Malet, and published in 1876, is called Annals of the Road.
