In the summer of 1946 the Reference Department Stock Room in the extension was re-decorated and converted into the Children's Library. The 'Juvenile' Library had been housed in the former Reading Room in the basement since 1911 and the move to a bright and airy room encouraged children to spend more time in the Library.
