Title
The Development of Marischal Square and Broad Street
Description
Demolition of St. Nicholas House began in July 2012 and concluded in June 2014. In March 2012 Aberdeen City Council invited bids for the redevelopment of the site. The Bon Accord Quarter Masterplan gave developers guidance about proposals which would be acceptable. Muse Development, the urban regeneration division of Morgan Sindall Group plc, in joint venture with Aviva Investors as the funding partner, was appointed the preferred bidder in May 2013. In July of that year the development was officially named Marischal Square. Following on from the In Memoriam St. Nicholas House 1970-2011 exhibition, this new sequence of photographs by Roddy Millar documents the development of the site from August 2015 to April 2018. The finished mixed use complex opened in late 2017. It includes office space, private parking, a hotel, retail and café/restaurants. It primarily consists of three major blocks, 1 and 2 Marischal Square and the Residence Inn by Mariott, towards the rear of the site. The three blocks were built around Provost Skene's House and a small new open space. The development also saw the part-pedestrianisation of Broad Street, with access restricted to buses, and the installation of an illuminated fountain and new greenery outside Marischal College. Mackie's 19.2, an ice-cream parlour from the Rothienorman-based company, was the first shop to open at the site on 5th December 2017. Another notable feature is a giant steel sculpture of a leopard, entitled Poised, by the artist Andy Scott, located in the atrium of 1 Marischal Square. Many thanks to Roddy Millar for sharing these photographs with Aberdeen Local Studies and to our volunteer, Caterina Nespolo, for her work creating this exhibition.
