Title
Freedom Lands and Marches of Aberdeen
Description
The March Stones of Aberdeen comprise two sets of historic boundary markers. The inner march stones, marked with 'CR' for 'City Royalty', mark the boundary of the crofts that ringed the medieval Royal Burgh of Aberdeen. The outer march stones define a larger area known as the Freedom Lands. The Planning and Building Team of Aberdeen City Council provide a good overview on the topic here. The images in this exhibition were a series of slides very kindly lent to the Aberdeen Local Studies by John Soutar. The photographs were taken in 1977-79 just after a restoration programme of the stones, undertaken by the Planning and Parks & Recreation departments, as part of a government jobs creation scheme. The slides have been digitised, edited and uploaded by the Local Studies team and a Duke of Edinburgh volunteer.
