Title
Celebrating Woodside: 125 years with Aberdeen City
Description
In 1891 Woodside was formally incorporated into the city of Aberdeen. However, it still managed to retain its own unique identity and strong sense of community spirit that it had enjoyed previously as an independent police burgh from 1868, on the outskirts of the city. The amalgamation of the burgh took place on the 1st August 1891, with Woodside being granted land to be used as a park (laid out as Stewart Park in 1894) and the Persley Bridge over the River Don. To celebrate 125 years of Woodside being part of Aberdeen City, staff from Aberdeen Central Library have put together a history of Woodside from the Victorian age onwards. We hope to show how a gathering of small farmhouses on the outskirts of the city in the early 1800's grew to become an important area in the North East of Scotland, at the heart of the city of Aberdeen.
