172 The Old Town House, High Street, Old Aberdeen, prior to the construction of St. Machar Drive. This Georgian Town House was built in 1788, by George Jaffrey, architect. Solid and symmetrical, it stands three storeys high under a piended slate roof with a central pediment and clock turret topped by a cupola. Over the entrance door is a freestone panel displaying the burgh coat-of-arms, dated 1721, wtih the Latin motto "Concordia res parvae crescunt" - By harmony small things increase. Aberdeen defeated Real Madrid 2-1 in the final held in Gothenburg, Sweden on 11th May 1983.
The conquering heroes landed, cup in hand, at Aberdeen Airport at 14.40 the next day. The team received a rousing reception and were given a celebratory cake on arrival from an offshore catering company.
It was then on to the open top bus for the journey from Dyce to Pittodrie. Grampian Fire Brigade lined-up their engines outside their Anderson Drive headquarters as a unique guard of honour for the team as they headed for the city centre.
As shown here, the city streets were packed with fans of all ages, including some who had travelled back from Gothenburg.
Lord Provost Alex Collie, the Queen Mother and Margaret Thatcher all provided messages of congratulations. Celebrations ended at a teeming Pittodrie.
Aberdeen FC had another triumphant tour through the city centre only 10 days later after they beat Rangers 1-0 in the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden Park. The match was on the Saturday 21st May and the parade in Aberdeen was the next day. Watson Street Lodge
733 A photograph of the Watson Street Lodge in Victoria Park.
The figures standing in the doorway are most likely to be Robert Walker (1848-1930), the Keeper of Victoria Park, and his family; his second wife Christina Walker and daughters Elizabeth and Ann. Judging by the 1891 census and Robert's eventual obituary, the family also had at least five sons.
Walker was previously married to Isabella Robertson. She died on 24th November 1877. This photograph likely dates from the later 19th century.
Robert Walker was originally from Perth and was himself a son of a gardener. He came to Aberdeen as a nurseryman and in around 1871 was chosen out of 450 candidates to be the city's first keeper of parks.
He oversaw the creation of Victoria Park, Aberdeen's first public park, before going on to lay out Westburn Park, Stewart Park, Union Terrace Gardens and the Promenade. Walker was also an early advocate and pioneer of the planting of street trees.
For a number of years Aberdeen had two superintendents of parks, Walker and a Mr Peter Harper at Duthie Park. When Harper retired in 1914 Walker was appointed general superintendent.
Post Office directories indicate that Walker and his family lived at the Watson Street Lodge, also known as the Victoria Park Lodge, from its construction in around 1872 to his retirement in 1919. His residence at the lodge was part of the job. On retirement Walker moved to the relatively nearby 111 Westburn Drive.
He was succeeded as general superintendent of parks by William B. Clark, who resided at the West Lodge of Duthie Park. A man called Robert Duncan replaced Walker as the keeper of Victoria and Westburn Park.
Over the years Aberdeen has had substantial success and renown as an attractive, green city. A considerable portion of the credit for this success must reside with the pioneering and dedicated work of Robert Walker. Aberdeen Ice Rink
860 This photograph of Aberdeen ice-rink shows a flurry of activity, possibly as a result of the events of 12th July 1940 when an enemy raider was chased over the city by Spitfires from Dyce. The Heinkel eventually crashed in flames over the ice-rink. The rink itself remained desolate after the war, being used as transport depot for a number of years.

1050 In 1901, Aberdeen Suburban Tramway Company proposed a system of tram routes running from the city to the suburban areas of Bucksburn and Bieldside. These came into operation in 1904. In 1914, the Company decided to acquire three Tilling-Stevens petrol electric buses to augment their tram service. These vehicles had a petrol engine which was used to drive a dynamo which, in turn, fed an electric motor driving the wheels. It was claimed that they were cheaper to use and easier for tram drivers to learn to operate. They were double deck open top rear entrance vehicles with benchseats inside for 20 passengers and slatted wooden seats for 18 passengers on the upper deck. Their maximum permitted speed was 12 mph. All three buses were converted to charabanc bodies in 1921, and were sold in 1927. Bydand Motor Transport Co. Ltd
1051 Bydand Motor Transport Co. Ltd. were one of a number of small bus companies which sprang up in the 1920's, and were based at the Western Garage on Great Western Road, Aberdeen. Many service men had learned to drive in the army during the First World War, and vehicle manufacturers were keen to supply new markets. Bydand announced in the 'Aberdeen Press and Journal' on 23rd May 1925 that they were to introduce a 'Deeside Motor Bus Service'. They offered a regular weekday half hourly service of buses between Aberdeen (Wallace Statue) and Bieldside with less frequent late buses and a Sunday service between Mannofield and Bieldside only. Buses were also to run between Aberdeen, Culter and Banchory. The fare from Aberdeen to Bieldside was 4p; Aberdeen to Culter was 8p; Aberdeen to Banchory was 1 shilling and sixpence. Within a few weeks, Bydand were extoling the virtues of their service in an advert headed 'Safety First'. The company made much of the fact that their buses started from His Majesty's Theatre and passed other theatres enroute. It was even possible to reserve a seat on the Banchory Bus when booking seats at His Majesty's Theatre. During the summer months Sunday Mystery Tours were advertised - a 60-70 mile trip for 5 shillings return. The 1930 Road Traffic Act introduced various restrictions and many small companies were taken over by the expanding company of W. Alexander and Sons Ltd. 1472 This photograph, likely by James G. Kellas and taken in around 1951, looks north west towards the farm of Westerton of Auchmill.
Its buildings are located just north east of the Northfield housing estate and remain at this location as of 2020. They are now largely bordered by Auchmill Golf Course, which also covers the previously nearby Dancing Cairns Quarry.
While the farm buildings still exist, this lane, which in the opposite direction would have lead to Westerton/Midtown Farm, has been replaced by the housing around Bonnyview Drive. Westerton Farm
1474 A photograph, likely by James G. Kellas and from around 1951, showing one of either two farms known as Westerton. Both have since been demolished.
It could be the Westerton Farm that was located on the old road that preceded Provost Fraser Drive. Near where Provost Fraser Drive now meets Springhill Road, in the space between Provost Fraser and Springhill Terrace.
This Westerton Farm was demolished shortly after this photograph was taken to make way for the development of the Northfield housing estate.
Across the old road from this farm was the lands of Springhill House and Farm.
The other Westerton Farm was just to the north east of Northfield Farm and a bit south of Dancing Cairns Quarry. This farm was also previously known as Midtown.
Like Northfield Farm (demolished late 50s/early 60s), this Westerton survived the initial development of Northfield as a housing estate. Ordnance Survey maps suggest the farm made way for the construction of Marchburn Court, and the extension of Smithyhaugh Road, in the mid-to-late 1960s.
It is difficult to say for certain which farm this photograph shows. The hills in the background perhaps suggest we are looking west towards the more northernly Westerton, the one nearer Northfield Farm. Silverhillock Farm

2190 Doric Dialect, also known as "Carnegie" was decorated by Gabrielle Leith. The design is comprised of Scots, Gaelic and Doric words drawn in an illustrative and descriptive typography. "Carnegie" enjoyed a short stay in Aberdeen Central Library before taking up a location outside the Sir Duncan Rice Library at Aberdeen University on the Dolphin trail. J. Scott Skinner

2670 A photograph of Victoria Road, Torry in around 1934.
On the left can be seen the hairdressing shop of Bert Wilson. He was a former mill worker who ran this shop from 1932 to 1946. He later became a hotelier.
He and his wife bought their first hotel in Angus in 1951. They subsequently returned to Aberdeen to take over the Waverley Hotel, known later as the Guild Hotel. During this time they also converted a house on Riverside Drive into the Park Hotel.
Wilson went on to run the Prince Regent Hotel, from which he retired in May 1977.
Next door at 119 Victoria Road is the premises of James McPherson, a radio and cycle dealer. He also operated from number 65 on the same street. He lived at 53 Mile-End Avenue.
Also visible in this photograph is a number of adverts on the side of a tenement. The products shown include Johnnie Walker whisky, Ovaltine and Capstan cigarettes. The back of a bus, a horse and cart carrying what looks like agricultural produce and the spire of Torry United Free Church can be seen too. Riverside Road, Aberdeen

The house is thought to date from the 18th century and is located along a drive at the western end of Countesswells Road. March Stone 8
3185 This stone is located at the back of the pavement at 37 Craigton Road. It is marked '8 ABD'. This house has since replaced the garden shown here with a double drive way, removing the wall to the left of the stone.
Described in 1698 and 1780 as marked with a saucer. The original saucer stone survived until some time after 1929.

A saucer stone survived until some time after 1929.
