2905 A group portrait believed to show some of the congregation and officials of John Knox United Free Church on Gerrard Street.
This church was formed after the Disruption of 1843 when Rev. John Stephen, the then minister of John Knox Parish Church, located nearby at Mounthooly, left the established Church to join the Free Church of Scotland. The first John Knox U. F. Church on Gerrard Street was opened for worship by Stephen on 31st March 1844. The later church on the same site was opened in January 1900, during the ministry of Rev. Robert Macleod. It is in this later building that this photograph is believed to have been taken. Likely during the late 1920s or 1930s.
This print was kindly donated to Aberdeen Local Studies by David Parkinson. His grandfather, David Charles Kelly Parkinson, is the tall, left most chap in the back row. The Five Graces
3005 A group portrait showing the five Henry sisters: Nan, Jean, Lib, Louie and Kitty.
Kitty is most likely a youthful name for Jeannie Henry (1869-1931) who married Walford Bodie and performed on the stage as Princess Rubie.
This image comes from a family photograph album, originally owned by Annie "Nan" Henry, held by Aberdeen City Libraries. John M. Cheyne in France
3348 A group portrait of the 10th Battalion Labour Corp in France during World War One.
The man eighth in from the right, in the third row (wearing a slanted bonnet style hat), is Private John M. Cheyne. He sent this postcard to his wife Jane Cheyne who was living at 5 Pirie's Lane in Woodside.
This postcard was lent to Aberdeen City Libraries by Bill Cheyne, their grandson, so that we could create and preserve a digital copy for public use. Sandilands: workers portrait
3827 An 1887 group portrait of workers at Sandilands Chemical Works.
John Miller established his chemical business in 1848 and for generations "Stinky Miller's" was the source of well-known smells down at the beach.
"Tools of the trade" are seen in the hands of these workers, who are mainly blacksmiths and labourers.
The 1880s maintenance workforce consisted of coopers, blacksmiths, lead burners, joiners, masons and labourers.
Sandilands Chemical Works was situated between the Gasworks and Garvock Wynd (north to south) and Miller Street and Links Road (west to east). |
