Honeybrae House
96 Honeybrae House. This house stood in the middle of a market garden near Morningfield Hospital about one-and-a-half miles west of Aberdeen City Centre. The lands were part of the old royal hunting forest of Stocket, given to the town of Aberdeen by Robert the Bruce. In the 17th century, it came into the ownership of the Skenes of Rubislaw and, in 1875, it was owned by Aberdeen Land Association. This two-storeyed house is most famous for its connection with the poet Lord Byron. In 1798, as a boy of about 10, he was taken there to spend a summer holiday while he was a pupil at Aberdeen Grammar School. At that time, it was probably a fairly new house, standing in its own grounds in a rural situation. He stayed there with his mother and their maid, Isabella Mitchell, before going to visit his old nurse, Agnes Gray. His room was on the first floor. By the 1830s, it was the home of a Captain John Boyd and later of market gardeners. Above the main door, there was a window whose thirteen small designed panes led it to be called 'the thirteen' window. By the 1920s, it had fallen into disrepair and the house was demolished in November 1928. The site was redeveloped for modern housing. Mitchell Tower, Marischal College

171 Mitchell's Hospital is situated in the Chanonry not far from St. Machar's Cathedral in Old Aberdeen. It was founded and endowed in 1801 by David Mitchell, a native of Old Aberdeen. It was set up for the purpose of lodging, clothing and maintaining five widows and five unmarried daughters of Old Aberdeen merchants. The women who lived there dressed in deep blue, and those who were able to earn some money from spinning or knitting were expected to give half to the hospital. The building is of one storey in the shape of a letter 'H' with a central refectory for breakfast. Depending on the cost of beef, dinner was boiled beef and greens two or three times a week, otherwise they had fish or eggs. The building has now been reconstructed into four separate dwellings. 365 This photograph shows a rather delapidated house in the once fashionable area of the Guestrow in the centre of Aberdeen. The word "Guestrow' may derive from 'Ghaistrow' because of the street's proximity to St. Nicholas Churchyard where 'ghaists', ie ghosts might be thought to roam. The tiled roofs and outside stairs were typical of these early houses. Note the handcart propped up outside. The Guestrow area was part of a slum clearance initiative by the Town Council in the late 1920s and 30s when most of the buildings there were demolished.
Correspondent Ed Fowler plausibly suggests that this is the dwelling house in the T-shaped Mitchell Court. Post Office directories and old maps tell us that the entrance to the court was just beside a public house at number 41 on the Guestrow. If this is correct then the large building in the background is likely to be Provost Skene's House, then probably known as the Victoria Lodging House. No. 27 Tram

The Balnagask Mains farm is partially visible to the left of the tram. The St. Fittick's Road terminus of the Torry Route is located further along Victoria Road.

734 Correspondent Dr Mike Mitchell informs us that this is the celebration of the take over of the Aberdeen District Tramways by Aberdeen Corporation in 1898. The photo was probably taken by Councillor Alexander Wilkie, who is recorded as having gone across the road from the Town House to photograph the parade, and was a Woodside based professional photographer. 864 This image shows HUU432, a Bedford OB coach parked outside Seafield Garage in Cullen. Notice the extensive array of petrol pumps in the background, with such examples as "National Benzone" and "Power".
The vehicle was owned and operated by Donald Grant. Of solid construction, it no doubt covered many hundreds of miles in its journeys through the North-East.
Seafield Garage was owned by John Lawrence, who was another bus operator in the town.

871 Photograph of a tram going to the Sea Beach. Correspondent Dr Mike Mitchell comments that tram 67 was built in Dee Village workshops - then the main tramcar works - in 1919 as an unemployment relief measure. The construction used parts from an ex-horse car conversion of the same number. It was delivered in December 1919 and ran until 1953/54. Stoneywood Works Home Guard

1134 This is tram 2 of the Aberdeen Suburban Tramways Company, which operated two routes from Mannofield to Bieldside and Woodside to Bankhead from 1904 to 1927. Car 2 was one of the four closed top double deckers in the first six ordered (cars 1 and 5 were open top) and is here photographed at the terminus at Bankhead.

1142 This is tram 4 of the Aberdeen Suburban Tramways Company, which operated two routes - from Mannofield to Bieldside and Woodside to Bankhead - from 1904 to 1927. This is one of the initial fleet of 6 trams (all double deckers, but two open top) which opened the line in 1904 and the photograph is taken at Stoneywood Church. The depot was just round the corner on the right.

1469 Correspondent Dr Mike Mitchell has been in touch to tell us that the horse drawn bus in this photograph is one of "Allan's Liners". This was the name given to the Aberdeen to Cluny bus from its introduction in 1849 until the route passed to the Great North of Scotland Railway motor buses in 1906. Allan continued to run mail gigs and coaches until at least after the Great War.

1519 Shepherd's Court gateway, Guestrow. This arch was initially removed to Union Terrace Gardens circa 1931 and then re-positioned in front of Provost Skene's House around 1970.

The sign that can be partially seen on the extreme left is likely for Hay & Lyall, a company of carvers and gilders that were based at 19 Guestrow for some time.
The company was run by John Hay (Jnr.) and his brother in law, Robert Watson Lyall. The Hay family played a long and varied role in the Aberdeen art trade, including providing frames for many local artists.
John Hay's obituary from the Aberdeen Weekly Journal, 21st October 1896 p. 5, gives particular praise to his decorative carvings on the ceilings of the Town House and the Mitchell Hall in Marischal College.
He was also a one time partner of pioneering photographer George Washington Wilson, who took this photograph.

Correspondent Ed Fowler suggests the image is of a dwelling, including exterior staircase, in Mitchell's Court. Likely the residence of a trader and hand carter. Five men sit in an early motor bus
1663 This image shows an early motor bus, seated for about 7. Note the handrails for boarding at the back, and the two bench seats. The bus is a Renault. This kind of vehicle would have been used to convey guests between a hotel and a railway station, or to Aberdeen Sea Beach from Market Street.

1730 Rothienorman is a village about 25 miles north of Aberdeen and 10 miles from Inverurie. The church began as a mission station in 1935, under Inverurie, before being raised to full status in 1947. In 1958, it became a joint charge with Culsalmond but it is now linked with Fyvie. Rev. Alexander Noble has recently been inducted to the charge but, at the time of this photo, the minister was Rev. Rodney Milligan, who had the charge from 1958. The church was designed by the Aberdeen architect, George Bennett Mitchell, in 1936. The roof is supported by arched oak beams which are painted black, as is the bell tower, in contrast to the grey harled walls. The pews came from the United Free Church in Rayne, while the communion table and chains in light oak were gifted by James Dalgarno, in memory of his wife. At first glance, its unusual design makes the passerby think that it is a private house but most visitors regard it as a beautiful building. Dr Charles Mitchell
1910 A portrait of Dr Charles Mitchell (1820 - 22 August 1895). The Mitchell Tower and Hall of Marischal College are named after him. He was a Aberdeen born engineer and shipbuilder who founded major shipyards on the Tyne. Mitchell became a public benefactor who funded many notable buildings. George Jamieson of Rosebank
2048 A portrait of Provost George Jamieson (c.1809 - 2nd February 1893). He served as Provost of Aberdeen between 1874-1879. Jamieson was born in Perth about 1809 but came to Aberdeen with his family early in his life when his father was employed by the Aberdeen Copper Company. He was apprenticed to grocer Robert Troup and for fifty years was the senior partner in the wholesale firm Jamieson & Mitchell. His first appointment in public life was a position on the Police Board in 1839. He was chosen as dean of guild in 1860. In addition to much council work, Jamieson was chairman of St Nicholas Parochial Board from 1864 to 1868, a director of the North of Scotland Bank and a number of public companies and also chairman of the Aberdeen District Tramways Company. He died at his residence, 19 Queen's Road, aged eighty-four years. |
