The original lead-covered steeple of the two churches of St Nicholas was destroyed, along with the East Church (Archibald Simpson, 1837), by fire on 9 October 1874. By 1876, the East Church had been rebuilt along Simpson's lines, and in 1878 the present massive granite tower and steeple were completed.
